off sides rule

so I'm not a soccer fan I don't know all the rules. I was watching my local team and they had a breakaway goal taken away because the other team couldn't get back on defense. "offsides"

wtf? my team got a goal taken away because the other team was slow to get back on d?

any who I started wondering why coaches don't exploit this rule. if I was a head coach id just tell my team never go past the mid field line, every time the other team heads towards my goal they'll be called offside.

am I a genius or what's the deal here.

If the defense went up to midfield then they could easily be lobbed over with a long through ball or if you just dribble past them then the offside line is even with the ball instead of the last defender which would allow you to pass the ball backwards.

In short, no you're not some tactical genius who noticed some crazy loophole in the system.

oh I never read the rule book.

I just don't understand the offside rule at ALL. ill go read about it now.

could someone try to explain, to a new soccer "fan", why offsides is important. shouldn't the defense ALWAYS have a man back, like a safty in nfl. penalizing the offense for being to fast or catching the defense sleeping shouldn't be a violation. I think, but I also think I'm missing something.

I'm in Portland btw and timbers games are something else, the crowd energy is truly awsome.

ok that helped, thanks. question. on a two man breakaway the ball handler can't pass to his teammate if the teammate is closer/ahead of him, only piss to a trailer? so the second player in a two man breakaway must stay behind the ball handler?

and another scenario. this time not a breakaway. let's say the 2nd to last defender (which includes the golie) is standing 5 feet inside the box. that establishes where a legal pass can be made? so you can't pass to anyone 6 feet in the box? and If that's true why would the defender stand 5 feet in the box rather than say on the box line. ? fear of getting dribbled around?

Yes he should be behind the ball or next to it.

Depends on where the ball is coming from. You have to get back when opponent is getting close to your goal. 5 feet is close to goal which probably means pass is coming from sides of penalty area, close to out line. In order to get an offside call, receiver should be closer to goal than ball, hard to get an offside position for defenders in that short length.

i dont really understand your question but you can pass to any of your teammates who behind you, or slighty behind you, no matter if its on right, left, or literally behind you

defenders stay on midfield line is called high line. offside trap strategy is much more sophisticated than that.

Offsides isn't that hard, but every 4 years you have a bunch of casual/budget soccer fans crying about it and/or coming up with some "genius" solution to game the system.

I remember they tried that in dutch (?) youth soccer in the late 90's/early 2000's and went back to the old system after a couple of matches.
But if you ask me they really have to change the passive offside rule, you can't be passive if you are in the box.
