Liggins Signs Camp Deal w/ Clippers

Post#1 » by tmorgan » Tue Sep 2, 2014 10:57 pm

I'm a little disappointed. I liked DeAndre Liggins on our Orlando SL team; I thought he showed something we could use, namely defensive toughness and a well-rounded, solid offensive game.

I really can't imagine why we'd rather have someone like Cartier Martin. Just shooting, I guess.

Cartier Martin is a high character hard worker. He's also kicked around the NBA a couple of years while the best Liggins could do is 10-day contracts. I would have liked to have Liggins in for a camp tryout and then maybe have him on the GR Drive, but we already have a full roster and players looking for tryouts will look to teams with less than 15 guaranteed deals on the books.

i think Martin has proved a lot more in the league than Liggins and he's coming over on a cheap deal.
I'd prefer Martin.

Yeah, not so sure about the "D" in "3&D" for Cartier Martin. In fact, I'm about 90% sure Liggins plays better defense than Martin.

I get that Martin can shoot 3's -- he's proven that, shooting close to 40% on over 500 attempts for his career.

He's not some highly experienced player, though, unless you mean experienced at riding the pine. Martin's played a grand total of 3153 NBA minutes, which is significantly less than what Andre Drummond has played in 2 years in the league (3862).

Yeah, I know. Liggins has only played about 400 minutes. Not the point though -- Martin does one thing well, and he's not some veteran presence, either.

There was an article about why SVG likes Martin. Something about back when Stan was with Orlando and the Magic were blowing the Hawks out. Martin came in and played like there was still something to play for. Needless to say, he impressed SVG enough there and with his resume to earn a league minimum contract with a player opt out. I'll take Stan's evaluation over a fan's eye test :/

No doubt, I thought Liggins looked good, and if we had an open spot, or even if he was say a 16th guy who could unseat somebody, I'd want him here. But we have a ton of mediocre small forwards. Adding or not adding one more to the mix is a non-issue for me.

Again, you going this based off of SL games, which is the preseason to the preseason. Martin can defend, he may not be elite but he's can defend, and he most definitely can shoot the ball.

I can see the need for Martin, although I doubt he plays much. I guess it depends on how many minutes SVG tries to squeeze out of Tough Juice.

I still like Liggins, though. It doesn't matter if it was the SL, all you had to do was watch him to see he has strong defensive instincts and near-elite physical tools. Someone needs to develop that guy, and I was hoping it would be us.

It's true, we're flush with middling-at-best SF's already, but I guess that's why I liked him -- at least he has some development to do and could get better. I think all of our other SF's are capped out at "decent" at this point.

There wasn't a roster spot for Liggins. I liked him in SL, but it's SL. Little to zero rim protection and weak defense. His numbers looked better than advertised.

I thought Liggins played pretty decently in the Summer League. I don't see him catching on with the Clippers. He would be a nice insurance policy to have on the Drive.

wanted him on the Grand Rapids team. Find it funny that up until he signs, not a peep about him. He signs with some other team, suddenly we get a thread complaining about the Pistons letting him leave.

Seems like people still misunderstand how Grand Rapids will work. Even if he did come to camp and get signed by the Drive, he can get signed to an NBA deal by any team at any point. Only players on the 15 man roster being sent down to Grand Rapids are controlled by the Pistons. So if he doesn't make an NBA roster, which I would bet is unlikely, and he signs with any D-League team, he'd still be an option if we for some reason needed him. Decent players typically head overseas though. Way more money to be made.

I understand what your saying, but again your completely over valuing SL Play, its very easy to look like a superstar in the SL, and skill set set apart due to lack of talent. Daye, Anthony Randolph etc. have been beast in the SL only to wither once the real lights came on.

I have thought highly of Liggins since his rookie season. He really just hasn't been in the right situation with a team to fit in yet.
