Exactly the kind of good platoon OF/DH that they could have used all season (career .856 OPS against LHP). Perhaps he'll find himself in that role next year.

Why wasn't this trade done in March?

This trade is only about 5 months too late.

Maybe the 1.6M salary was too much to take on. Would have had to ask Buehrle for some help.

Francisco? Why not DH Lind with Mayberry, Francisco sucks, he stands just above my K-K-Kolby Rasmus on my painful-to-watch list.

I just have a feeling we'll let Lind go. 7M for one half of a DH platoon and he hasn't really been all that healthy these past 2-3 years. If you could guarantee me Lind's health then I would love to bring him back.

You could potentially sign 2 quality bullpen guys for that 7M or trade Dickey and put that 19M towards an ace.

You don't pick up a player like Mayberry (i.e. a 30-year old platoon guy) unless you want to compete next year. Ugh... let's hope more meaningful moves are going to happen if that's the case.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

This deal also opens up SS playing time in Dunedin and New Hampshire, for some of the Jays higher rated prospects. I just don't know why AA didn't pull the trigger on this way earlier in the season?!

JMJ's .213 batting average should help lead the September turnaround.

JMJ would have helped this season. Career .856 OPS against LHP, hitting them well in limited AB's this year, and two more years (2015-16) of control left. Unfortunately, the move was made too late. I'm sure something like Esmil for JMJ could have been done in March where Alex wouldn't have had to take on salary. Just seems pointless to make the trade now, especially when Valencia is here to essentially play the same role.

I'm given to understand that Mayberry sucks on D. I think we'll be seeing a Gose/Pillar platoon in CF next season. Those two should be able to manage a .700 OPS in a platoon, while giving us strong D and speed. Mind you, AA doesn't seem to be too interested in the defensive qualities of his players, so who knows.

My hope is that he isn't here as Melky insurance.

I'm going to guess the Phillies wouldn't have done it sooner because they were hoping Mayberry would be worth keeping longer. Now, they might have been facing a decision whether to keep him on the 40-man roster this winter, and I wonder if we faced a similar decision with exposing Pierre to the Rule 5 draft.

Alex's teams don't seem to care about defense, so a Gose/JMJ platoon in CF wouldn't surprise me. I mean, this team was running out Fat Juan at 3B, Edwin in LF, Bautista at 1B/CF, Melky in RF, etc. There is no point in having all of Pillar, Valencia, and Mayberry on the bench because JMJ and Valencia are redundant, and the team would need a back-up IF (likely Maicer) and a back-up catcher. Someone's going to have to be sacrificed, and I'm guessing it will be Pillar if everything remains the same.

Now, if they plan on using Pillar or JMJ in LF to replace Melky, then we might as well forfeit 2015 and start the new GM search now.

I'm probably very wrong, but I have a sneaking suspicion that this deal is the first sign that we're not going to resign Melky.

I hope I'm wrong.

Don't understand the "Why wasn't this Mayberry trade done sooner" unless the implication is not so much about Mayberry, but trading for a role player like Mayberry. I'm guessing the Phillies thought they were a playoff team and that's why they decided not to trade Mayberry back in March?
