Re: Does your management do this trade?
Still, look at what we're doing here. Olynyk has the potential to be what we hoped Monroe would be- a skilled scoring big with a jumper to compliment Drummond in a high-low. He's a better fit and significantly cheaper. This trade will not only give us a chance to get a perfect fit at PF, but also get our SF of the future in Young, have the cap space to add better vets or accept a salary dump for more picks, gets us a competent starting SF for the immediate season, and gets us a pick to go with it. I honestly really like this trade for us.dan2314 wrote:Most of us would get rid of smith for not a lot of return, but thats only to free up monroe at PF. Now with monroe threatening/not really wanting to resign, some would try and get what they can out of him, but if smith's gone, he would be happy.
The main point here is, there is no reason to get rid of BOTH for not much of a return. Its just getting rid of one that needs to happen. And i think is why monroe still hasnt made a move. If smith is gone, he'll be back.

Brandon Bass starts for a year as PF but Olynyk is the stretch four to partner with Drummond long term. Jeff Green becomes your starting small forward, who, unlike Smith, can make 3s a good rate. Young gives you a swingman prospect to develop with KO and Drummond. Thorton could also be had as well because he is sort of the odd man out in Boston with Rondo, Bradley and Smart.
I figure something got to give in Detroit. Drummond is untouchable. I get that but I don't see how he works with either Monroe or Smith. From what I've read, Monroe wants out and wants to play center. Boston and Detroit both have unbalanced roster's that, if reworked, could turn both push both teams toward the playoffs. This trade isn't perfect for either team but no trade is. It looks like both teams are going to loose huge assets (Monroe and Rondo) to free agency next year unless some moves are made. I think they might be good trade partners.
I like it. A lot.
Olynyk fits better than Monroe and he's on a rookie deal. Green for Smith makes sense. I'm not high on Young and would probably flip him or KCP for a young point. I'd strongly consider it without Young, to be honest.
I really doubt many Celtic fans do this.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Re: Does your management do this trade?
It'd probably hurt us this year, but I'd do it (the last one -- Moose, Smoove, and Singler for KO, Green, Bass, and Young).
I don't know if Olynyk is the answer at the 4, but I know that Monroe and Smith probably aren't. That'd also open up a ton of cap space in the future.

I prefer this trade. I like Olynyk. I don't think I would ever CHOOSE to get rid of both Smith and Moose, but if I did Green and Olynyk plus a prospect and a "stopgap" in Bass could work, depending on draft considerations and contract lengths. I have not idea what the contracts look like for Bass and Green, so there might be friction there.

I'd do this all day as long as the Pistons get to keep their pick this year.
Jennings / Augustin / Dinwiddie
Meeks / KCP
Green / Young
Olynyk / Mitchell
Drummond / Gray
That's what the Pistons would have under contract next summer with ~$30 mil in cap room and Jennings & Green both being expiring contracts. That could set us up pretty nicely moving forward.

Re: Does your management do this trade?
Generally speaking you don't trade a dollar for 2 quarters, 3 dimes, and 3 nickels, and 5 pennies, which is more or less what you've proposed here.
There is a little bit of leeway given Monroe's situation, but I still don't see anything super intriguing about this offer. Maybe I just don't like Sullinger as much as you do. He scores at decent volume, but to be honest his efficiency really bites. Having a guy with mid range abilities doesn't help much if he still only shoots a bit better than Josh Smith and doesn't compensate with a 3 point shot.
Taking back Wallace takes almost all of the positivity from dropping Smith's deal. Very little value in that swap IMO, it brings almost nothing to the deal. This coming from someone who hates Smith.

I want James Young in any Celtics deal. It would give us a actual decent SF prospect to grow with our young fellas.

Re: Does your management do this trade?
He won't come out and say it for obvious reasons, but Monroe DOES NOT want to play with Josh Smith. Monroe has to agree to any trade this year because of his bird rights. So I can't see a scenario, short of being dealt to an immediate contender, who's also interested in giving Moose a big deal next summer, where he agrees to be traded along with Smoove. So if The Cs are that interested in pairing up Rondo and Smoove together, they'll have to forget about getting Moose.

Possibly the most fitting analogy for how the NBA works. It's better to have the talent accumulated in fewer players, i.e. having a couple stars/superstars, is better than having a team full of below average starters all the way down the bench.
