It's been pointed out to you (over and over and over and over and over again) that you can't use newly (re-)signed free agents like Hill or Johnson in a sign-and-trade for Bledsoe unless Bledsoe is going to sit out part of the season and stay at home.

I don't understand why you keep ignoring that point.

Larry Coon's FAQ wrote:In addition, teams cannot trade players under the following circumstances:

------snip------

-For three months or until December 15 of that season (whichever is later) after signing a contract as a free agent or matching an offer sheet to a restricted free agent. This obviously does not apply to the trade completing a sign-and-trade transaction (see question number 91).

-For three months or until January 15 of that season (whichever is later) after re-signing a free agent with Larry Bird or Early Bird rights, if the team is over the cap, the player's new salary is above the minimum, and he receives a raise greater than 20%.

Jordan Hill reached an agreement with the Lakers on July 11th. They officially inked the contract with pen to paper on July 23rd. So there is no more chance to rework it into a sign-and-trade. He can't be moved for Bledsoe until January 15th, since he was re-signed using bird rights.

And no, don't bring up "it works in the trade checker", because whoever programmed it didn't bother to have it check for dates and the fine print in the CBA, only checking salaries and cap circumstances. The trade can legally be executed on January 15th and not a day before. Just because it works in the trade checker doesn't mean it's legal RIGHT NOW. It will be legal on January 15th. Bledsoe is not sitting out the season to wait for a sign-and-trade while he cools his heels at home watching games on TV until January 15th.

Same for all the other free agents that the Lakers signed or re-signed this summer (like Wesley Johnson). They're all off the trade table until Dec./Jan. 15th. You CAN'T use them in a sign-and-trade for Bledsoe. Not allowed unless Bledsoe sits out the season and waits till those players are trade eligible.

It's not like this is the first time you're hearing this. It's been brought up over and over again every single time you proposed this trade. You just refuse to acknowledge the illegality of it.

It doesn't make sense to spend such a large part of the cap on the back court anyway. Presumably, it will take 13-14M+ per year to get Bledsoe, thereby eliminating the possibility of another large contract at least next year if someone becomes available. Moreover, with the questionable health of Kobe, the last thing the Lakers need is another health risk.

Nash, Sacre, 2015 Houston 1st round pick, remove protection on the pick we owe them, 2016 2nd round pick and 2018 2nd round pick for Bledsoe 4years/60million.

These kinds of all-in trades are what got us in trouble in the first place.

Unless there's an A-list superstar available, we gather assets and make opportunistic trades, building slow for now. Eric Bledsoe is not making us title contenders. I'd rather have the Houston pick (they might miss the Playoffs for all we know, team is drastically worse), and if Bledsoe gets injured WE might miss the Playoffs again and need protection on our pick if we hope to keep it and improve.

I'd rather trade our expiring contracts for assets or wait till the summer, have a look at the cap, and see who wants to sign with us.

#1 Pick, Nash and Sacre to Suns for Bledsoe

Post#713 » by goldrodd » Thu Sep 18, 2014 6:45 pm

Send the # 1 pick from Houston to Phoenix, Take off the top 5 lottery protection off add Nash and Sacre and bring Eric Bledsoe to the Lakers now. This move allows the Suns two #1 picks plus retire a legend. Sacre is young and could help off the bench. Removing the lottery protection guarantees another pick. Bledsoe would increase the defense at the point of attack and supercharge the young legs on fastbreaks. Lin could play some shooting guard with Kobe at the smallforward. Change the dynamic....Lakers could be a very dangerous team with Bledsoe pushing the ball.

I know it likely won't matter much to you in the grand scheme of things we cannot just remove the protection off a pick that we do not own.

Meaning we can't take off the protection Houston placed on their pick when we traded for Lin? I guess that makes sense.

Okay so they agree to trade the # 1 pick from Houston and their own #1 pick top 5 protected. The pick still belongs to the Lakers until they finish outside the bottom 5.

if you mean next year's pick that's already going to Phoenix from the Nash trade. (although it's top 5 protected.)

That being said, picks aside, no way is Sacre and Nash's expiring nearly enough for Bledsoe. Sacre's probably not in the top 300 players in the league.

Yes, if Bledsoe is threatening to sign the QO the Suns don't have a ton of leverage, but they could get better immediate help, IMO.

You have to bear in mind, not only is Bledsoe's potential vastly better than anyone the Suns could get for him, but their best player by far, Dragic, is an unrestricted free agent next year.

The Suns can't risk losing Bledsoe for Sacre and picks--they NEED to make the playoffs or be setup to impress the next season, to legitimately compete ASAP. If they trade EB, they need to please Dragic--they need to win the trade, not simply acquire mediocre picks and a poor prospect.

Yep, Dragic's impending free agency is why I don't think the Suns will S&T Bledsoe unless they get an offer that knocks their socks off.

Bledsoe is their insurance policy in case Dragic walks. Dragic will be unrestricted, while Bledsoe is restricted right now. The Suns will match any offer.

They're not even afraid of Bledsoe taking the QO, since that won't happen.

If there's a good trade out there, the Suns will take it. But they're not going to sign-and-trade him for garbage, and there's little risk of him signing a QO, so there's no way that prospect will force them to panic.

It's just posturing on both sides, the end game is already set.

I believe a Suns "insider" on one of their forums leaked that they were prepared to offer him a frontloaded, declining pay-scale 4yr contract that would pay him what he would make if he took the QO this year and the first 3 yrs of a new max contract. So he could take the QO and all the associated risk, or he can take the deal and make the same amount in 4yrs that he would make if he took the QO.

He's not getting the max contract he wants, and he's not getting traded in a panicked fire sale for garbage. So there's no real chance here for opportunistic teams looking for a bargain fire-sale.

A QO this year would pay him $3,726,966. The max starting salary right now for him would be $14,746,000. Next year, the cap will go up slightly (probably not that much, since the new TV deal money doesn't kick in yet). Let's just use that same figure for next year as a placeholder. If he signs with another team who doesn't have his bird rights, the most they can give him are 4.5% raises or $663,570.000 per year.

So that comes out to:
2014-2015: $3,726,966
2015-2016: $14,746,000
2016-2017: $15,409,570
2017-2018: $16,073,140.000

Which comes out to a 4yr cumulative payout of $49,955,676. Not much higher than the 4yrs/$48M deal that Bledsoe reportedly turned down. Maybe you bump it up slightly due to a cap increase next year.

Taking the QO will mean that the max contract that begins in 2015-2016 would run beyond the 2017-2018 season, of course, for more guaranteed money. But it also means pushing his next contract a bit further down the line, instead of an earlier free agency and possibly pay hike.

Now, the Suns have his bird rights, so they can offer him 7.5% yearly increases or decreases. So to achieve the same 4yr payout of $49,955,676 (using 7.5% yearly pay decrease off the starting year figure), it can be structured like:

2014-2015: $14,072,021.41
2015-2016: $13,016,619.80
2016-2017: $11,961,218.20
2017-2018: $10,905,816.59

That would pay him $49,955,676 over 4yrs, the exact same amount of money he would make in the next 4yrs if he took the QO and then got a max (first 3 yrs of his max deal with a non-bird rights team).

Now, you can add in a bit more money maybe, to compensate for cap going up next year, and as extra signing incentive to get him to agree to a frontloaded, declining pay scale contract. But overall, it still comes out to maybe a couple of million more here or there than the 4yrs/$48M deal that they reportedly extended and he turned down. Maybe this slight bump is all that he's holding out for, and they'll offer it right before training camp if he still threatens to sign the QO.

He can take the deal, or risk the QO and yet gain no financial advantage in the next four years (any max deal he signs with another team after the QO will extend beyond those four years, of course) and push his next free agency and potential pay hike even further down the line.

In the end, the Suns will retain him. Unless they get a GREAT offer from another team in a S&T. He's their insurance in case Dragic walks. And they have the means to keep him, with the QO threat being pretty much null when they can match the same money he would earn if he took the QO and then went for a max (at least in terms of money earned in the next four seasons).

They're not giving him the 5yrs and 7.5% bird raise max deal he wants. And they're not trading him for table scraps. And they'll just give a final offer that equals what he can make in the next four years if he takes the QO and gets a max contract after, with it structured to their advantage.

At least this is what an "insider" at a Suns forum said. Basically, it's posturing on both sides, and the end game is already set.

They'll S&T him if they get a killer offer, but they're not trading him for Nash and Sacre  They'll just re-sign him as Dragic insurance because the QO threat is pretty much null under these circumstances.

Now, after they have Bledsoe locked in, they might trade Dragic before the deadline if they don't think they can retain him. Or if they manage to re-sign Dragic, then Bledsoe might be offered as trade bait (this time locked into a team favorable declining scale contract that offers more value in trade due to increasing cap flexibility each year of the contract).

Or they may jettison one of Dragic/Beldsoe/Thomas/whoever if they feel someone isn't working out, or if they get a great offer.

But no, they're not doing a panicked fire-sale S&T of Bledsoe for fillers and crap  Not when they have that ace in the hole of a declining scale offer that pays about the same as what Bledsoe would make if he took the QO (for the next 4yr period, anyway). It'll only be slightly above the 4yrs/48M offer that was reportedly rejected, not the 5yr max that Bledsoe wants.

I have no confidence that this will stop the Bledsoe trade proposals from GoldRodd, of course. But he's no longer including non-trade-eligible guys like Hill in his illegal S&T trade proposals, so that's an improvement and sign that we're getting through to him
