Pretty stunned that Nishikori beat Djokovic, Cilic serving for the first set against Roger now too. What a shocker of a final that would be.

Federer is getting killed, but hey, tell me when he's down two breaks facing triple match point and I'll be worried.

Really don't wanna see Cilic in the final where you just know his level is gonna drop.

How do we know that? After watching his matches this tournament I certainly don't know that.

I'm really dreading a transitional period in men's tennis. None of the guys coming up look like consistent threats.

Just the way he's serving this match. What was it, 90% points won on his first serve? I don't think he can sustain that especially against Kei who's one of the best defenders out there.

Tell you what, Djokovic's loss was one of those "wow, yeah that's not likely to happen again" matches. Cilic beating Federer though was dominant play. Del Potro-esque. Still seems unlikely to maintain this in the future - dominant performances by "bigs" in tennis like Del Potro and Krajicek don't seem to be maintained - but playing like that, Cilic absolutely looked like the best tennis player on the planet.

Well, I'm not saying it's going to happen, but if a 6'6" power server is painting the corners with his serve, there's no antidote for that. The finals thus will be determined by how Cilic plays more than how Kei plays.

Congrats Marin , samo tako dalje, jos jednu.
When you put on that jersey, the name on the front is more important then the name on the back.

Michael Jordan (and Ahmad Rashad) was in Federer's box.
Federer is wearing a shoe he and Jordan collaborated on.
MJ would have appreciated the clutchness of Cilic.
Cilic 13 aces, 43 winners, 23 unforced errors, and great entertainment.
Even Federer had 12 aces, 28 winners, 17 unforced errors, so a high quality affair.

To be fair people always thought cilic could be grand slam caliber. He just underachieved.

If Monfils had converted those matchpoints, would we call Monfils "grand slam caliber" too

It is good that Serena is there to keep the bar at a high level for others to aim for.
She won this US Open and her worst set was 6-3!
She has a great chance of reaching Graf's 22 slams (although I'd recommend she wins more than one slam next year).
But its good that Serena is beatable (she had a poor year at the slams prior to the US Open so the others have hope and can take some glory) and extremely dominant at the same time

What a weak final. Congrats to Cilic, though. Nice to see some fresh faces.

Cilic played great, looked like the moment plus the sum total of all of his previous matches were too much for Nishikori to handle.

Re: US Open 2014 (8/25-9/8)
Interesting that Cilic played rather conservatively on a lot of the breakpoints, but Nishikori looked scared and did not take control of the big points (and as Cilic's weight of shot was greater, those rallies went his way)......
Well, typical of a debutant. And Michael Chang was known for losing big matches (apart from that French Open), so he may not have had much advice for Nishikori today.
