Apt comparison but in a more general sense the Knicks are and will forever be Tottenham
Tottenham are actually the Raptors under MLSE and their puppet BC. Knicks are more like Aston Villa.
United is similar to the Lakers. After a century of success a rapid change in the most important person at the clubs retires (Ferguson/Jackson) and the successors fail to continue the business. While trying to rebuild they struggle to add the right balance to the teams and the supposed superstars acquisitions are either redundant to the existing star players and their position (Dwight, Pau/Rooney, van Persie, Falcao, Kagawa, Mata) or fail (Nash/Fellaini).
Actually I think a better comparison for united would be the Spurs post-Popovich. Man that team is going to be a mess once he retires.
