World Cup 2014, ie., the BOGDAN scouting thread

Post#1 » by aIvin adams » Wed Sep 3, 2014 5:25 pm

well Goran looked great yesterday against Korea. of course. he looks like he's in the same form as last year, shooting stroke looks so clean and he's attacking the basket with creativity. basically this is a nonstory thread wrt Dragic. ([stereotyping]- Korea plays absolutely strangely. one of their players deliberately banks straightaway threes-- i dunno if it was the same player, but later a Korean at the FT line banked two FTs. have you EVER seen that before? seems so...asian. [/stereotyping]) (pps - best part of the Cup is the clash of playstyles from around the globe. Europe, Asia, N America...they all play their own style of bball).

Bogdan is playing now vs Brazil.

First half notes:

- Bad half for Bogdan. playing hard but all the 50-50 calls are going against him.
-Cons:
-- Letting his less talented teammates dominate offensive possessions while his team is struggling and needs his talent.
-- Unaccustomed to the length/athleticism he will see in the NBA (getting blocked on drives and losing the ball).

-Pros
-- Won't quit. Keeps playing hard even when nothing is going right for him.
-- Plays hard - tries to take charges, goes hard to the rim when no one else wants to challenge the tall timber of Brazil's big men.
-- Athletic - strong, broad shoulders, quick feet, NBA body.
-- Ballhandling. For a guy his size, he's got good handle. Serbia has repeatedly struggled w/ spacing, with one player following on the heels of another on the same side of the floor. a couple of times Bogdan has been stripped was because of this. in a better system he seems like he could be more creative off the dribble.

so far in the third quarter he is scoring and is playing hardnosed defense, leading Serbia in a comeback. i really like his attitude.

welp Serbia lost.

Bogdan Son-of-Bogdan's final line: 2/7 FG, 1/3 3P, 8 pts 3 assists 2 rebs 1 stl.

This guy is definitely an NBA player. He can curl around an inside screen and pop out, stop on a dime, and he has a quick release on the catch and shoot. He has the physical tools to be a defender and a slasher. As far as I can tell, he really has it all. Good pick by the Suns and could be a nice rotation player in a role similar to Gerald Green but with more playmaking and more consistent defense (less athletic and not as reliable as a shooter yet obviously).

tomorrow he and Serbia play Greece at 1 pm AZ time (I think). that will be a good test for BOGDAN son of BOGDAN, particularly on the defensive end, where he will be asked to track down any number of excellent perimeter players on the move (Fernandez, Llull, Rubio, Sergio, Caldderon).

Today he had trouble getting stuck on screens. Tomorrow he will face even better screeners (the gasols and ibaka) and an even better offense. I will be keeping an eye on how he fights thru screens and stays competitive against the top team in the world (jk USA fans jk jk jk).

I saw the game, too (cheering for Brazil, ofc), and I think Bogdan played well, despite the poor stat line. He is not the main player on the team (yet), but he showed up and flashed signs of great passing and off-the-ball movement. And a sweet stroke, despite the poor FG %.

nice. i hope Brazil gets matched up w ARG to start the KO round. it will probably be sengal or croatia (i think) but it would be fun to watch Scola go out against all yer bigs. I think Brazil will get another shot at Spain.

welp. looks like Brail is gonna squeak by Egypt.

Mathias - what do you think of Neto? he has looked great on defense in this WC but haven't noticed his offense (which is OK, there are a lot of good guards on Brazil who excel w the ball in their hands). who has his draft rights.. POR?

What a choke job by Slovenia, losing by 3 pts against Lithuania. They managed to score just 2 points in the last quarter, missing at least three 100% chances under the basket (Omic - the Slovenian center playing like a complete idiot, fg 2/7) and three wide open 3pt shots. Goran Dragic - chokemaster of the game: 12 pts in 33 min (fg 5/14, ft 2/5, 1 reb, 4 assists, 3 TO). The best Slovenia can hope for now is 5th place. So angry... Would be okay with it, if Lithuania played brilliantly and Slovenians gave their all, but that was absolutely embarrassing...

I have seen 4 Serbia's game and I am not impressed with Bogdanovic. He is a great catch-and-shoot guy, and have some playmaking skills (good feeding interior players) but that is all. Defensively he makes a ton of little mistakes and his position in front of his man is not enough low so he is easy to pass by dribbling penetration. Not a good rebounder or strong player by any means, he has to gain muscle and experience to fight screens and box out.
Does not have a good pull up jumper or pure mid range game...it seems a three point shoot specialist sometimes out there.
Hopefully he improves with Obradovic next year, he is young and it seems to me that he loves to compete and play basketball...that is very important too.

Younger and with a more consistent outside shot and better playmaking ability. Also bigger with greater wingspan. Intangibles are on Zoran's side though...

Right now, Zoran is the better player. He is way better defensively and make all the little things. Bogda is a better creator and pure shooter, and is younger so his ceiling is higher than Zoran's.
We will see, but I prefer Zoran if one of them have to play in the NBA in 2015/16.

Yeah, he dominated us. He was impressive on both sides of the court. Lock-down defense and excellent shooting.

The games are on perfect time over here, so I've been watching a bit.

Bogdan looks like a bad-ass.

Has a nastiness to his game that I really like - a big, ball-handling guard who can hit the 3, lots to like. He had a nice block against a guy posting him up too and looks like a really smart player.

Unfortunately I see a little bit of Giricek in him, but hopefully he's more Manu in terms of a SG who can handle it a bit.

I'm actually rooting for Slovenia over the US. Would be a great upset. Don't care about US basketball in FIBA since we're a lock to win it as long as our stars are playing.
Not looking so good right now but hopefully Slovenia competes to the end.

plus he can close out on the shooter and fight thru screens. a couple unnecessary TOs but whatever. semes like a great late 1st pick by the suns, at this point.

nice win over Greece, serbs.
