Questionable pass rush

Post#1 » by radtech » Thu Sep 11, 2014 1:20 am

The Niners recorded three sacks during the Dallas game but the pass rush could have been better considering Dallas almost abandon the run. DeMarco Murray was on his way to a 200 yard game if they stayed a little bit more patient. Tank Carradine should make his debut sooner than later. He played the entire preseason and reported no effects from his injury that kept him out all of last year. Aaron Lynch played but Carradine can and will provide a pass rush as well. Will his skillset he could be a bigger outside linebacker in certain sets.

I think there is a lot of context missing here. Sure DeMarco Murray could have run for 200 yards if they stayed more patient, but they couldn't stay patient because they were down 3 scores 15 minutes into the game.

Furthermore, not only did we rarely rush 5, we rarely even rushed 4 outside the redzone. We pretty much played prevent for the last 2.5 quarters of the game, willing to give up 5 yard runs and 5-8 yard passes and make Dallas take 10-15 plays to score. Had we been more aggressive on defense the game may have been a lot closer. Romo averaged 7.6 ypa while completing over 60 percent of this passes. One of those was the 56 yard pass to Harris that Cox just missed. Without that pass, he averaged 6.25 ypa.

Would I have like to see more pressure? Of course, but given the game situation, and losing our two starting CBs (motivation to keep guys in coverage), I would say it was more by design that we didn't have a great pass rush. How many times did we not pressure Romo, but he was forced to check down and pick up 4 or 5 yards.

I disagree about Carradine at OLB as well. His lateral movement, though quite good for a DE, would get him eaten alive in space whether it's zone or man. Let him put his hand in the dirt and rush how he always has. I do expect to see him active this week with only 2 RBs though.

Brooks needs to get in shape and out of Fangio's doghouse.

I can't see Tank at OLB, per se, but we typically play our OLBs as DEs in nickel packages. No reason Tank couldn't be getting some reps in that scenario. Dobbs and TJE have been great UDFAs for us, but they just aren't nearly as talented as Dial and Carradine. Really disappointed those guys were inactive this past week. Hopefully Fangio gets over that in the near future. I've been dying to see Tank next to Aldon and Justin for over a year. If he's not seeing the field by the time Aldon gets back, I'm not gonna be happy. It's clear the young DL have talent, so let's get them some experience before the playoff run.

Definitely when Dial has shown progress/growth from last yr(limited)

Tank is the most hyper 49ers prospect in a long time and we still haven't seen him... So far no mention of healthy concerns so what gives?

I'm hearing/reading that its assignments... its the **** the defensive line, how complicated are his assignments? especially if you ease him in as a pass rusher on passing downs...

Dallas has a really good offensive line and we really we're were mostly in a sorta prevent defense for most the game after we went up by so many points. It still wasn't a great performance by our front 7 aside from J Smith but I'm not concerned with our pass rush yet.

I have to agree in that I don't see why Dial or Tank aren't active. Dial should be active at least since he can play both DE and NT. I mean maybe they aren't fully assignment sound yet but I just find it hard to imagine them not being able to get in their for a handful of plays especially in pass rushing situations.

Dobbs and TJE are solid and are really want you look for in backups but it's obvious Dial and Tank are future starters and far more talented and disruptive than those two are.

Dobbs does play on most if not all STs units, which may be part of why he's active. Still...

Tank needs to be unleashed this week. He's a first round talent and he could really help us on 3rd downs. I think keeping him out of action was due to his lack of discipline to the scheme. Also - they probably wanted to send him a loud message that should light a fire. They can simplify his role until he gets it, and use his pass rushing abilities on 3rd down right next to Justin. We need all the help we can get right now with Aldon out. I'm okay with Dial being inactive for now. He's not as crucial at this stage. We were in a position of luxury last week to be able to sit back, but we're going to need to start bringing the heat on 3rd downs.

STs seem to be the reasoning why Tank and Dial sit.

Still I can't see either one of those guys couldn't take the 5 ST snaps TJE had.

Part of it I think is Fangio just loves to have his vets out there and isn't too keen on playing younger guys unless he has too in the case of Reid and Ward.

The thought of Tank pinning his ears back and hunting the QB give me wood.

Versatility is a plus I understand that but if pass rush is greater with tank or dial(assuming) then you just got to roll with the dice...

Better have it n not need it than need it n not have it

Corey Lemonier is so ineffective as a pass rusher based on my assessment. Sorry Sick but he is. Tyron Smith is one of the young upcoming great OTs in the league, but C'mon... He absolutely manhandled Lemon in last week's game toying with him. Lemon was not only pathetic as a pass rusher, but he also played below average against the run - unable to seal the edge on running plays allowing Murray to run wild.

The kid looks like Tarzan but plays like Jane.

At least last week, Lynch looked like the better of the two. We'll see what happens going forward. I would hope Lemonier can develop his speed move a bit more. We need him to show up, though.

Verty early in the Dallas game the pass rush was non-existent and there was little push on the Dline overall. Romo had a mile of space and all day to throw

Again the pass rush was lacking most of the time. Why not blitz every once in awhile instead of just rushing four all the time.
