Everything Rasmus
Before Tuesday's middle game at Oriole Park, TSN.ca sat down with Colby Rasmus for a discussion about his season, what's gone wrong and what lies ahead beyond his days in Toronto.
Much has been said and written about Rasmus, including in this space, and this was an opportunity for Rasmus to share his thoughts without interpretation.

Not really, though.

It's a telling interview for sure (and one that will do him no good with this organization, not that it matters at this point anyway). He sounds burned out, like a guy who has lost whatever desire and joy he once had for baseball. It's really too bad the Jays and him couldn't make it work in Toronto, the scapegoat firing of Mottola last offseason seems to have had a major impact on him in 2014.

He couldn't hack it in St. Louis either, a far better organization than the Jays. At some point it becomes the player's fault, not the organization(s) he's played for.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

There was definitely a lot of "woe is me" in there. He was holding back a lot but it sounds like he was just ruined by the Cards and never recovered mentally.
This interview won't do him good not only here but anywhere else. It sounds like he needs some coddling or he needs to sign with a team with zero expectations. He should go back to the NL and play somewhere where there isn't any pressure.

Oh, I have no doubt it goes both ways. In much the same way as somebody like Lawrie, Colby Rasmus is clearly not your average baseball personality and that's going to turn a lot of people off.

Professional athletes don't divulge stuff like this very often and for good reason (it doesn't benefit them in any way). But Colby isn't your average athlete. He sounds like somebody who just wants to play this game without people trying to change him and without the expectations that he'll become anything more than what he already is. To be free of all the outside pressures of it all. The analogy he made to feeling like an animal at the zoo particularly stood out to me.
I don't know what Mottola did with him last year that allowed him to feel comfortable, but it sucks they couldn't replicate that feeling this year. His Jays career could have ended completely differently if they had. We'll never know for sure, but he just may not be the kind of guy who handles the mental grind of being a major league baseball player all that well.

Unfortunately, in pro sports you're never going to be able to just play and escape all criticisms or pressures. If you're playing well you can get away with it, but it's always going to be a "what have you done for me lately". You're right though, it doesn't sound like Colby can handle that aspect. He'll continue to play because he wants to make more money, but he sounds pretty bitter about the game.

Re: Everything Rasmus
His family didn't help him out either. He's a multi-tool guy. He has speed. He has some power. He has good defense. If he was consistent he would be fine but his heart isn't in the game and I don't know if it could be in the game where he's at mentally.
I rooted for the guy. I thought if he could raise his average he would be an ideal 1 or 2. He does seem to be close to Lawrie actually and not having him around for much of the year might have played in his head. He's a good ol' boy in a MLB club house he could be the odd man out. Damn, Gose isn't ready yet to replace him.

If he gets his bat on a ball he usually crushes it, but he doesnt get his bat on the ball that often...hes been a disappointment so far his entire career...his fielding is solid though

I'll miss ya, Colbs. Those god damn throws from centre and those god damn strikeouts. But that swing. And that range. And that hair.

So when he was a top 10 centre fielder in 2013 (for the Jays) and 2010 (for the Cards), who do we give credit to?

Re: Everything Rasmus
It's also clear from this interview that Rasmus thinks way more about everything than most baseball players which, unfortunately, is probably a flaw. I was hoping that Brandon McCarthy was going to usher in a new age of intelligent, outspoken, successful baseball players. Clearly not going to be the case.

At least Gose gives a damn. Maybe we address the position through trade or free agency. All I know is that Rasmus is not the answer. You just disagree with people for the hell of it lol. You want to sign that waste of talent to a big contract?

If you've read the interview above, you'd know that Colby "giving a damn" isn't any kind of issue. If anything, the guy is overworking and overthinking everything he does.

Nah, just those who post Rasmus sucks for the hell of it.

Been watching sports all my life big guy. When someone doesn't have, they don't have it. Can't turn chicken turd into chicken salad. So many players live off that "potential" tag. How many of them turn their careers around after this many seasons?
