NBA.COM Grades Hawks Offseason as 'Average'

Post#1 » by Jamaaliver » Mon Sep 22, 2014 6:29 pm

OVERALL GRADE C

While they were briefly linked to some "bigger" names in the summer's free agency, for a second summer in a row the Hawks ended up not splashing out cash for an All-Star level piece...Baby steps are fine, but can the Hawks ever be anything more than a mid-level Eastern Conference playoff team without adding a superstar?

Overall, the Hawks need more quality and more depth. And after this offseason, there is still work to be done.

FRONTCOURT B-
BACKCOURT B-
DEFENSE C
BENCH C
COACHING B+

Thoughts?
Is this offseason marred by Ferry's fiasco and Gearon's Power Play?
Is this team strong enough to make the 2nd round for the first time in 4 years?
Could this team survive another catastrophic injury to one of it's big three?

The overall consensus I'm getting from outlets seems to be that Horford's return is the biggest occurrence and will allow us to maintain our place as a Playoff team.

The actual moves made this summer don't seem to have sunk us or vaunted us to higher levels.

I think the overall gradings are pretty accurate. I would have changed the coaching grade to an A- though. The fact that the Hawks went through injury h3ll all season and coach bud was able to carry us into the playoffs was a pure miracle. Then fact that we pushed Indy to 7 games was also just incredible, another reason the coaching grade deserves an A-. The biggest impact for the Hawks this season is going to be our ability to stay healthy as a team. IF we stay healthy for the season then I see us earning a 3-4 seed in the playoffs. With that being said, I believe this team definitely has what it takes to win in the first round at the very least. MAYBE even an upset in the 2nd round and a trip to the ECF. But will we ever get past the ECF? No. At some point we HAVE to bring in another star to ATL if we ever hope to accomplish that dream.

I think that's accurate.

Money to spend, can't buy any talent. Signings were average at best. Thabo sefolosha and kent bazemore don't make us an ECF team.

Cleveland is the clear frontrunner. After them the Bulls.

Are we better than
Knicks
Wizards
Miami
Brooklyn?

I think we could be. We have the potential (if healthy) to be a top 5 team.

Indy is devastated by injuries and loss of talent.

Celtics are a basement team. Charlotte, not sure I buy their stock just yet
