Been watching sports all my life big guy. When someone doesn't have, they don't have it. Can't turn chicken turd into chicken salad. So many players live off that "potential" tag. How many of them turn their careers around after this many seasons?

huh are you speaking of pillar? cause thats one guy you cant turn into a major leaguer. Same goes for Gose how long will AA excuse his play for potential?

Colby is what he is at this point and thats still a significant upgrade over the two kids.

I guess Toronto sports fans are so use to losing that we settle for mediocrity. We need consistent producers. Whether that's obtaining them through trade, free agency, etc. You guys have your opinion, but how can to write mine off. A large majority of sane fans think along the same lines as me. I know you're likely unaware of this, but Colby Rasmus was one of the best CFs in baseball just last season (and remains the best CF option on the Jays).

That's what it boils down to. He is the best they have. I'm not conviced Gose or Pillar can be anything but role players. Colby has shown he can be a very good player. It could end up being another case of him just not being able to be good again as a Jay, which sucks.

I'd take Colby on a short term contract over Melky on a long term one (which I have real doubts about). Considering that the organization hates Colby enough to bench him for an entire month during a playoff race for AAA scrubs, though, that isn't even an option. So I'll take any spending I can get.

I don't think Melky will be back. Getting that done could very well require the largest FA contract the Jays have ever given out.

Four years is definitely long term. I worry about giving that kind of length to a player that is already a very poor defender with a bad plate approach. If any of his great contact ability goes away as he pushes into his 30s, you''d be looking at essentially a valueless player for the remainder of that contract.

An interesting thing about track records (and something you won't hear in the media) is that Colby Rasmus (103 wRC+) is actually a superior hitter to Melky Cabrera (102 wRC+) over both their careers. And he obviously plays the premium position of the two.

But you're right, we're talking about things that won't happen. Let's be honest, Colby will walk...and we'll offer Melky the QO, which he'll decline and we'll be left with a Jose/Gose/Pillar outfield. Maybe a cheap replacement replaces one of them.

The Jays are forcing Colby out for whatever reason and Melky is likely going to cost too much for this organization to re-sign. One would hope, though, that they could find something better than scrubs like Gose and Pillar. There are actual major league OFs available in FA and trade.

The funny thing about this is both Gibbons already pinned the blame on management when it all began at the end of August. So which is it now?

Personally, I don't think Gibbons benches a player of Colby's stature when he did without the backing of Anthopoulos.
