Thabeet is a low risk addition that gives Drummond Hibbert-esque size to practice against. He's like a simulation module (that's kinder than saying test dummy). Having him on the roster is like when we invited Johnny Flynn, another body to run competitive drills with very little hope of making the team.

non-guaranteed deal makes him a non-issue

Nothing to see here folks. :noway:

Speed. He just isn't mobile enough to to help and recover in the NBA. If he could just sit back in the paint and block shots and rebound, he could contribute. Unfortunately for him, NBA coaches aren't stupid and won't just let him do that. They lift his man or make him play pick and roll and he becomes an instant liability.

This is probably a nothing move, but there really is no downside. If he comes to camp in great shape and shows he's worked on his game - great. If not, he bangs with Dre for a bit and then gets cut. I just don't understand why he would be trying to latch on here. With Monroe in the fold, our 3rd string center is essentially 4th string. I would think he would have been better off trying to make a team without so much size up front already.

Hasheem Thabeet signs Non-Guaranteed deal with pistons

I'm not sure getting Thabeet just for practice is going to help drummond.

To slightly change a quote from Allen Iverson: "how the hell is thabeet supposed to make his teammates better by practicing?"

Power Shift.
I'm guessing this is a preseason body/"wanna join Grand Rapids when we cut you" contract.

Why would Thabeet bother slumming in GR for $25K a season? Given our big man depth we can't be his first choice for a try-out/look, so I assume we were almost a last resort and he used a good word from Caron Butler to get him the invite in hopes of enticing another NBA team or even Euroball team to offer him a contract after the pre-season or something.

He was a 2nd overall pick. So unless he blew all his money, i'm pretty sure he could slum it for a while. Its all speculation, but if there was a better offer, he would've signed it by now.

The guy's a bust through and through, but if he is a good body our bigmen to practice on, then why not?

That's my point though, why play for $25K busing it from town to town playing in front of dozens, maybe hundreds when he could never play another game in life and be a millionaire.

On a side, Detroit also has Brian Cook coming in with a camp invite. Thabeet, Brown, Cook and Bostic will round out our camp roster with the 16 guaranteed contracts.

Why not play basketball for a couple weeks for $25k if you enjoy the game and have nothing else going on?

Hes 27, probably would still like to prove hes not a bust. Probably close to see his family since he hasn't signed a Euro Contract, seeing as they seem to sign anyone with a pulse. Probably got a good review from Caron Butler. Why quit already? Scott Hastings lasted 11 seasons, why quit at 27?

Most likely his time here will be used for an overseas audition.

Ehhh....He's no Chiekh Samb, but he'll do.

p.s. After looking at that highlight reel above, I can't believe we are his (at least) 5th team.
Tom Gores' Securus faced a class action lawsuit in 2024. The company engaged in a "quid pro quo kickback scheme" with county jails in Michigan which banned in-person visits in order to maximize revenue from voice and video calls.

Entertaining rant by Iverson, but holds little merit. Thabeet will be another body on the floor. Another obstacle to body with or go over. He will not make the team but there is value in having another bit of resistance out there for Drummond.

I'll bet that Brian Cook makes the team when it's all said and done. Mitchell will be cut because he's not good enough and Datome will be traded or bought out because we can't offer him PT and he could either get better offer to go back to Euroball or catch on with another team in the NBA. Datome will not beat out Singler or Butler(given the money paid to him and how Stan believes leaders need to play to hold weight), and Martin will be the garbage minutes, just happy to be in the NBA, end of bencher SF.

In the climate where domestic abuse is all over the news, a guy who walked away from millions of dollars to take care of his wife while she fought cancer is something to be rewarded in a way - and a role model veteran for the young team. He's also know his role as last big man on the bench, and has some range to his shot.
