OK, he will be able to hang - or crush you :)

Just make sure he has a properly fitting bike (if he is too fast just add lead weights inside the frame) - you could do a ride in the park when it warms up before doing the entire circuit - 20 some odd miles (or about 2 hours).

Oh, we've been doing two hour rides for awhile now. We're about equal now. We've done a 20 mile ride already, I think the DC circuit will be more than that.

Marcus Smart has such an amazing body. If anyone is looking for the pinnacle of human athleticism and proportionality, I highly suggest looking at shirtless photos or clips of Marcus.

sweet potato (much healthier than reg potato)
broccoli
oatmeal
brown rice
beans/lentils
cabbage
spinach
lean meat in moderation
fish
yogurt
fruit

limit your diet to those things (or similar) and good things are likely to happen

Ugh, I gained so much weight this year. 15 pounds!

Too much alcohol. Too much dealing with ex-wife. Too much age.

I am going to focus on just being a healthy overweight guy - focus on weightlifting, not so much hour long cardio sessions. Year before last staying under 180 was just agonizing, doing cardio all the time and just not getting any payoff out of it.

I guess what I was getting was not gaining 15 lbs.

Interesting tidbit -- doing squats on an upside down BOSU, I end up with my feet pointed down at the bottom of the squat. So that means in my normal squat motion I'm leaning forward at the bottom. Huh!!!!! No wonder I have back trouble now. Wish the BOSU had been around back when I was a college student, maybe I could have corrected my form, saved myself some pain. I always thought I had perfect squat form. Yeah. Not even.

Maintenance is made in the gym. Loss is made in the kitchen. Neither and you gain.

Props on squatting on an upside down BOSU to begin with. I'm not much of a squatter, especially with anything above 225. I prefer deadlift for the heavy stuff. Easier to keep my back straight.

I love the BOSU ball but pretty much only use it for one-legged squats (holding only dumbells) or for one-legged deadlifts. I'm scared to squat any kind of serious weight on it. By upside down, do you mean flat side up? That's the way I do it. I actually find it easier than ball side up.

I was just doing deep knee bends, no weights. I haven't been able to put weight on my back for years now. I'm strictly a bulgarian squat/lunge guy now.

I might add some dumbbells as I get used to it.

Yeah, flat side up. I did them both ways. The idea is to shock your body with a different motion, not to lift a whole ton of weight.

Even without "ideal" food, workout with heavy weights an hour a day and live in a walking city and weight falls off fast.....

I had a really encouraging followup exam with my surgeon yesterday. He was much
more unconditionally optimistic about my prospects for resuming running in a serious
way than I remember him being when I first saw him and explored the utility
of doing something for me. Life is good.

That said, additional patience will still be required. I'm one month + few days
post surgery and he feels 16 weeks (total) is a reasonable amount of time before I can
run again. I can live with that.

Had another post-op visit with my surgeon yesterday following the osteotomy
I had in early May. He prescribed for me something new that I had never heard
of before, the alterG treadmill. It's pretty cool (in the videos, have not tried it yet)
but it allows you to unweight up to 80% of your body weight while running. When
I went to their website a few minutes ago, there was a list of orgs that use it
and at the top of the list was....wait for it,
Spoiler:
the Washington Wizards.

That the
Spoiler:
Wizards
are using it actually isn't a big surprise. As nate has pointed out,
Spoiler:
they're clearly doing a better job managing injuries than they have in the past. They've been vigilant and proactive about resting guys when injuries are in the early stages to help prevent big things down the road. Shutting down Wall and Beal for "stress" injuries are good examples.

agreed - but that will never prevent some folks here, you know who you are,
from being Monday morning clinical diagnosticians without ever having
seen the individual they are sure they know more about than the professionals
who see them every day.

FWIW, I was able to get an appt (in McLean) to be evaluated to use this thing as quickly
as tomorrow. Should be interesting.

I don't think you'll find that at XSPORT. However, there is lots of hot ass that will motivate a person to work harder. If not harder, then smarter.... See your future....

Good luck with the anti-gravity machine.

These guys work out all year for one chance to be #1.

Tried the AlterG treadmill this morning. Very interesting. I'm not sure
how much I'm going to get to use it. Insurance will cover rehab but not
'training' which in my case is almost the same thing.

It definitely allowed me to run with less discomfort. My experience
with it also gives me a clear example of what it would be like to run
if I weighed less. At my age and with my knee, maybe I should not have
required such a clear example.

Why not run in the pool or swim lanes? I see people doing it all the time at my gym. It's easy on the joints.

Tried it. Maybe I need training in effective ways of doing this. That said, how would one
adjust the degree of weight borne in a pool. The AlterG allows the user to adjust the
weight borne in 1% increments from 20% to 100% of your body weight.

I used to swim a fair amount, maybe 5000 meters a week or more. I don't know that
it had much impact on my weight or muscle mass. I have added swimming to my
regimen in anticipation/preparation for the triathlon I will be doing the weekend
after Labor Day.

Dckngsfan, are you a trainer? I saw the "my athletes" phrase in your post.

PCbothwel--same question, are you a trainer or a highly dedicated fitness enthusiast? Couldn't link to those forums at work but I'll try them at home.

I'm 39 3/4 but I appear to be ageing in dog years after 30. I work 6 freaking days a week and I have two kids, and my wife commutes to NOVA from Richmond 2-3 days a week including most every Friday so she's often not home until 8:00 pm. Wow--I love this forum, just writing that out made me forgive myself a touch for being overweight b/c d*mn, I've got a lot going on.

Anywho, any sneaking in a work out advice (aside from getting up at the crack of dawn b/c my dog will hear me and then the whole house will be awoken) is welcome. I'm definitely swimming uphill. I think having a desk job since turning 22 has been an a$$kicker that the science is just starting to catch up with on the problems with sitting.

W. Unseld, check out the Paleo or Atkins diets. Atkins is more palatable. I'd also suggest seeing an anti aging doctor. It's amazing what some legal testosterone in low doses along with moderate exercise (30 minutes 4 times a week of weightlifting) will do for you. Fat will literally melt off, you'll feel younger and be a new man in 3 months. You MUST exercise during any Atkins stuff. Walking isn't exercise you need to build muscle via resistance training.

Buy a home gym, one of the 2000 dollar ones where people do cable crossovers. Between that and one Olympic bar and two 25 pound weights you can even do light squats.

Focus on compound exercises. Squats, deadlifts, pull ups and bench presses. Even light initially will work every single muscle group in your body. Do 2 sets of each, you'll be done in 20 minutes. Combining that with a low carb diet will transform you.

I definitely agree with the notion of buying a home gym and doing weights at home. But you can do it for a lot cheaper than $2000. You should be able to find a decent power rack off of Craigslist for $150 or so. Then get a 300-pound olympic weight set. Dicks has them for about $220, but you can probably find them cheaper at Craigslist. Then pick up a utility bench for $80 or so at Walmart (or cheaper at Craigslist). So for about $400, you can have all you need for the major power exercises: squats, bench press, deadlifts, weighted pullups. You have it in your basement so it's convenient. And all for less than the cost of a 1-year pass at a gym.
