shawn marion was unsigned in september. Ray allen is still unsigned in september. Eric Bledsoe is still unsigned in september. Are any of these guys worth picking up?

Come on now, you know those three guys are outliers and not comparable. They were only unsigned because they chose to. Bledsoe turned down a $50M offer, Allen is probably retiring and Marion was reported to have agreed to a signing in late July, he just had to wait for the Love transaction to be done with. And none of them spent the previous 2 seasons in the D League.

Don't get me wrong, I think CDR is a good value signing and he might be able to help us some for a few minutes a game, but he's not starting material in a contender, that's for sure. Barnes probably isn't either, at this stage.

For those who doubt CDR will have a major impact on this Clippers team, let's see what your comments are AFTER you see him play. I say that the Clips just got better for certain. Doc Rivers, your Mensa Society honorary membership is waiting for you.

anybody know why Charlotte didn't pick him back up?

hoping for bigger strides offensively from MKG I would assume. Also draft PJ hairston and Vonleh, and signed Marvin Williams. Jeff Taylor should be back from his torn achilles too. Probably just not enough room. I dont know for sure though.

Brandon Robinson, The Source (9/13/14)
A spark off of Charlotte’s bench, he averaged 6.0 points, 2.4 rebounds, on 39 percent shooting and was the veteran presence the young team needed. “What my time in Charlotte did was give me solidification on what I’ve been thinking this entire time,” Douglas-Roberts tells The Source.

“Now it’s like, ok, keep going, keep proving yourself, and keep going up on fools. Let’s go.”
...

The Source: How excited are you to head back to LA?

Chris Douglas Roberts:
Very, very excited man. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for me to be able to play at the highest level on a championship contender. I totally understand how important this opportunity is so I’m already preparing to do everything I need to do and more, to capitalize on it. I pride myself on being a hard worker and a student of the game. My quote that I live by is ‘Don’t Cheat the Grind.’ I use it for every aspect of my life. In this case if I didn’t over prepare myself for this opportunity I’d be “cheating the grind” so to speak. I’m definitely excited but I know how important it is to get the job done. The real excitement comes when you win a title.
...

The Source: What will you envision your role being this season in LA?

Chris Douglas-Roberts:
I spoke to Doc. Doc believes in me. He told me how underrated he felt I was. He couldn’t understand why my journey has been so rough but none of it matters now. He said he picked me and wanted me in LA. It feels great to be wanted by a team of this caliber. He wants me to be aggressive on both ends of the floor. Be that wing player/defender that he sees me as. He told me their goal is a championship and I’m definitely with it.

I kinda think CDR can help for more than a few minutes a game and IS starting material for a contending team. This will just be his first chance to prove it. Check this out: http://t.co/fXw5Ph9MKl

i think CDR will help more than hurt us, but not a clear cut starter over barnes. which isn't what you exactly said so Im not making a rebuttal but rather adding to the conversation here.

Barnes' career stat lines vs CDR's read like this

PER 13.4 vs 11.7
Ortg 108 vs 103
Drtg 106 vs 105
TSt% .547 vs .530
3pt% .333 vs .335

not a huge separation, but Matt does come out as the better player here.

just last season alone

PER 12.0 vs 12.2
Ortg 107 vs 111
Drtg 106 vs 105
TSt% .552 vs .588
3pt% .343 vs .386

CDR is better across the board, but only slightly and very similar.

I think it will come down to the fits and what the coach wants. there is a good chance Doc would want to start Barnes for the continuity or keep barnes to come off the bench to be the caption of the second unit defense, but it will be a very close call.

I say they are virtually the same player other than their on court attitude.

what can be significant here is that Matt's numbers has regressed last year from his career numbers, which could indicate a decline where as CDR's numbers significantly jumped up last year from all other years in the past. can CDR keep his progress going? is Matt really losing his abilities on the court? or at least one or both are just a single season fluke?

I can't wait to see how this all plays out. NBA is corrupt as **** but i still love my clippers.

Apples and oranges when you look at the variables. A little misleading to compare career stats for a baller in the league for 11 years (Barnes) vs a 5 year player (CDR). Even last season stats are skewed when you consider CDR only played 49 games vs Barnes playing 63 games with more games as a starter, etc.

But the GOOD thing is that these 2 players now play on the same team. A little healthy competition for that SF spot is all good! This is gonna be a good Clips season.

not necessarily apples and oranges. their personality differences aside, both are 3 and defense guys. both have pretty much the same size. they play the same position.

one happens to be a vet who is slowly winding down his career, but many have bounced back from 1 subpar season to enjoy their career prolonged before they truly had to hang em up.

the other is a young player who enjoyed just 1 good season, and many have regressed after just 1 season into obscurity and early exit from the league.

it is not a stretch to think the opposite of the conventional idea of one falling and the other rising. on the other hand, it just maybe a case of just that. its a pretty close call even if both are doing well in terms of their talents and who exactly is the better player among the two.

only once the season starts we will find out.

I agree, they do have their similarities and neither is a high impact player, more of a glue-guy type role. CDR has a lot more upside than Barnes but is higher risk as he has only had one good season. Matt Barnes has experience and a higher bball IQ. Like Ned said, we won't know who will add more value until we see them put their off-season practice into play.

I think they will have similar value, but we will have good consistent average to above average play from the SF position for 48 minutes, and that is two way production. Without having a higher level player at the position, there isn't much more we can ask for.
