Football wise if there were no cap, this would be a no brainer. He'd change the character of the DL in a hurry.
The reality is, when he becomes a FA, he will be the DT version of Julius Peppers when he became a free agent. I don't mean this in a bad way, but it is the best analogy. He'll be one of the top 2-3 players at his position for the first year or two of the contract, he'll regress some over the term of the contract but will still be pretty good. The trouble is, that contract will be $15M/year +/-.
If you have a team that is great at drafting where you don't have to worry about finding all of your key guys in free agency, you could afford to splurge on a guy like Suh. The best drafting team in the league would be hard pressed to find a DT like him available to them in a given draft. But if you need to make your bones in FA, the cost of a player like Suh probably hamstrings you and keeps you from contending.
So, who are the Bears under Emery? Are we good at drafting or not? So far, it's debatable. Some of these guys look promising, but I'm still not blown away by the results.
