I don't keep up with the NFL nearly enough to really understand the salary situation, but from the sounds of it, the Panthers appear to be in a familiar bind- the financial bind our Bobcats were in just a few years ago... big contracts everywhere, not enough talent/too many injuries to be good. Think this might be a wasted season for us.

Our ex GM Marty Hurney gave out two massive contracts to two freaking running backs when the league was in the middle of turning into a passing league, then gave Charles Johnson a massive deal and he flat out sucks. Have to also eventually extend Newton which will cost a ton of money.

This is where I'm really worried. I know we've got to spend some big bucks on Cam pretty soon, but what if we're still capped out? We can't afford to lose him, obviously. There's no chance of that happening, right?

Normally its very, very rare for elite players to leave teams that drafted them. But today news came out that Suh of the Lions, which is one of the best defensive tackles in the league has already proclaimed hes leaving Detroit at the end of the season.

But there is a 95% chance we extend him.

at least he stays manageable ...J-Stew makes close to 10 million in 2016/2017......we must get rid of him. 10 million should be the TOTAL you spend on RB's unless you have a superstar RB

Unfortunately we can't just "get rid of him." Most of his cap hit is related to signing and restructure bonuses, which players get at signing but the cap impacts are amortized over up to 5 years.

If a player is cut or traded before all of the amortized amounts have been realized, then the future cap impacts either immediately (if cut on or before June 1) or are distributed over two years (if cut post-June 1). If traded, the cap hit from money already paid stays with the previous team, which is why trades (especially player for player) are so rare in the NFL. Some contacts now include "offset language," which gives a team some reprieve if a cut player signs elsewhere by nullifying the amount of salary the player signs for with their new team. The savings, however, are usually negligible.

While Gettleman did restructure the contract upon his arrival - creating short-term relief but a long-term liability - that pales in comparison to what Hurney did by giving him the contract in the first place. The amount of dead money in relation to salary means that cutting Stewart in the off-season would have cost 4 TIMES THE AMOUNT IT WOULD TAKE TO KEEP HIM. Basically, cutting him this year wasn't an option because doing so would've put us OVER the cap.

2015 Cap Hit: $8,300,000
2015 Dead Money: $13,600,000

The amounts are closer next season, but the dead money if cut still exceeds the cap hit. However, designating him as a June 1 cut makes it a bit better. As a June 1 cut, only the already-paid bonuses and guarantees of 2015 would hit the cap next year. That amount would be $6.3m, a savings of $2m based on the original cap hit of $8.3m.

That said, the other shoe drops in 2016, when all the other dead money hits the cap. That totals $7.3m, which is also over $2m in savings when compared to keeping him.

To summarize: Barring a big year after recovering from injury, I think Stewart is gone next offseason.

If I remember correctly until DG got his hands on this contract we could have cut him this past offseason and saved money. DG tried to make his contract more tradable by guaranteeing almost everything he had left. This moved it to salary and meant that if traded we would have a smaller cap hit but if cut it would be massive. This was a terrible move on an injured player as a devalued position.

Can't say I want to see Deangelo cut, he's still got a little left in him. He shouldn't be the feature back at this point in his career, but I'd like to see him stick around.

Regardless, we had virtually no space at the time so I guess he figured he'd restructure the younger back in hopes he'd get healthy.

Base salary moves on in a trade. A number of bonuses were converted to base salary so they could be moved. But because they made all of the salary guaranteed it costs more in the long run.
