The toughest decision was whether to leave Lee unprotected, but I'm guessing with a cap of only $45M, the expansion team isn't going to want to commit a third of their cap space to a 31 year old complimentary player. And if they do, we'll take the cap space thank you very much.

I was on the fence about this too, but I think you have to swap Ezeli and Lee (i.e. keep Lee, don't keep Ezeli). Doubtful you'd really get much with that TPE, and Lee is a useful player.

Funny that there was debate about Josh Smith, yet nobody else has commented about this one (yet).

A little tougher to choose than I thought actually. I could see the team taking Watson, which would suck because I don't want Stuckey or Sloan to be the backup point guard. I wouldn't want to lose Rudez either since we have no idea what he will do and he's cheap but I can't justify putting him over Stuckey (I'd assume he'd get picked due to his talent and minimum salary).

I'd probably leave George Hill and CJ Miles unprotected and essentially dare an expansion team to eat their long-term deals. I'd probably protect Watson and one of Cope/Lavoy/Rudez/Shayne, depending on who looks best, long-term.

Yeah I thought about Hill and/or Miles. I doubt they'd take either, but I'd be hesitant of hurting Hill's confidence a bit. It could be explained to him, but still, depending on what else is out there they may nab Hill. He can score decently well and few teams will have anything beyond end of the bench guys or highly overpaid average players. For a team in this scenario Hill's 8 mil a year is a lot more manageable as a starting guard than Deron Williams.

Yeah, I'd rather NOT lose him, especially for nothing, but an extra $8m available free and clear for the next 3 years would make up for it.

The current owners won't make the rules so an expansion team will be good right away (they'll probably also won't be eligible to win the lottery for a couple of years as well). They'll start out as a super D-League team then gradually have the ability to compete.

I acutaly think that there's 3 options for the last unprotected spot: Lee, Bogut and Ezeli. On talent, Ezeli would be the obvious 9th man, but he's very cheap, youngish and a sure expansion team selection if available. Lee and Bogut both might get passed over. If anything, I'd expect Lee to be taken over Bogut. If an expansion team takes a couple of big $$ vets, they would want them to play, not be limited to 25 mpg for 60 games as Bogut probably is.

Bogut's contract also runs a year longer than Lee's - and I expect an expansion team would want to spend their own money as soon as possible (rather than have their cap filled for a long time with bad/questionable contracts from other teams).

But regardless, it's got to be terrifying that 5 of the most "valuable" (i.e. their play might actually be worth their contract) guys on the Knicks are Larkin, Aldrich, Prigioni, Dalembert, and Jason Smith. Sheesh...... not exactly a Murderer's Row......

Yeah, Bogut changes games without big offensive stats. Lee gets offensive stats but rarely changes games. Even with the injury issues, I think the Warriors would hold onto Bogut here, by a wide margin, over Lee.

Same here, even if I didn't want to keep him. Bogut has injury and contract "issues" that will turn some teams off, but you drop a defensive C of his calibre into the trade pool and wait for the offers from contenders to roll in.

It's all about having cap for next year.
P. Prigioni about $3K guaranteed next year
Cole Aldrich expiring deal
S. Dalembert expiring deal
Jason Smith expiring deal
Shane Larkin $1.7 M Team Option
I. Shumpert $ 3.7 M Qualifying Offer
THJ $1.3 M Team Option
Melo A boat load of cash (Max)
It's all about cap.

Kings
PG: Collison, Sessions, McCallum
SG: McLemore, Stauskas
SF: Gay, Williams, Casspi
PF: Landry, Thompson, Evans, Moreland
C: Cousins, Hollins
ung: Bhullar, Wear, Burton, Johnson (These won't count, meaning they are unprotected)

Protected
Cousins, Gay, McLemore, Stauskas, Collison, McCallum, Landry, Sessions
Unprotected
Williams, Casspi, Thompson, Evans, Moreland, Hollins

Landry and Sessions could maybe be replaced by Thompson and Moreland, but I believe this is what D'alessandro & Co. would pick. They love Landry and after this season, Kings fans may regain their love for him. Sessions may be protected for a great production-to-contract ratio.
I think Thompson would be the best option for an expansion team.

Clippers Protect:
Chris Paul
Blake Griffin
DeAndre Jordan
Jamal Crawford
Spencer Hawes
CJ Wilcox
Matt Barnes
Reggie Bullock?

Unprotected:
Jordan Farmar
Chris Douglas-Roberts
Ekpe Udoh
Joel Ingles
Glen Davis
JJ Reddick

I wasn't sure on the last two protected, but think Redick will be left off the list due to his contract being unattractive for an expansion side.

I agree on the protected list and also agree that Bebe would likely get picked up.
