Rockets Parting With Robert Covington

The Houston Rockets have decided to release forward Robert Covington while continuing to listen on trade interest, league sources told RealGM.

Covington and the Rockets will part either way, allowing the 23-year-old to play for another organization.

The Rockets had been impressed with Covington’s development within the franchise a season ago, a skilled 6-foot-9 product using his shooting and slashing to average 23 points and 9.1 rebounds in the NBA Development League.

Covington was awarded with several honors with Rio Grande Valley in the D-League — including the All-Star Game MVP, Rookie of the Year and the All-First team.

After going undrafted out of Tennessee State, Covington received interest from several teams as a free agent before signing a multi-year contract with Houston.

I was really surprised he didn't get drafted and I'm surprised now that he got cut because he's a good defender and capable of making the threes. He can turn into a good 3 & D player. He's young, cheap, and with some potential. Perfect project for the San Antonio Spurs.

They probably would had they had roster space. It's disappointing when there are only ever one to two teams that know how to develop young talent. Too many teams in this league suck at player development, which is why players like him who have what it take to last long in the league barely get a shot.

Yep. At some point every team may have a d-league affiliate so the coaches could coordinate and run the same system. It would make moving up an easier transition and they wouldn't need to release promising players outright.

This guy's potential is huge...he can be a role player on a championship team...The only problems is almost all of the rockets bench overperformed in preseason so its sweet troubles of Morey now....

But I have no doubts Robert will be back in rockets uniform in no time...look how many former rockets Morey took back to his wing this offseason....once a rocket always a rocket thats how you treat your players...God job Morey!!
