Butler is getting paid $4.5M with designs on him providing the veteran leadership and Stan rightly believes (unfortunately in this case rightly) that you need to play in the rotation to be accepted as a vocal leader type so Butler is going nowhere this year - he'll play 18-20 minutes per game. We'll use the second year team option as trade bait one has to assume though, that the second year was contracted that way for the sole purpose of being a non-guaranteed contract, though that would depend on when it needed to be picked up.

Ideally we'd find somebody with an overpriced SF looking for an overpriced PF. It's too bad Sacto is enamored with Gay, because Gay for Smith/Singler/Bynum would be something I think could work for both teams. McLemore could play the three a bit, with Singler backing him up there, with Stauskas at the 2-guard full time starting.

You don't judge aging vets by preseason games.

We'll see how he fits in as time goes on, but I would suspect his role will depend on how the KCP/Meeks duel plays out.

Kilo is pretty spot on. Binary Man pt 2. And I'm OK with that given out options. We're not exactly contenders and we need leadership as much as we do talent.

Honestly I don't think Singler is that much better at this point.

It would be one thing if we had Andrew Wiggins waiting in the wings, but at this point I'm fine with him being a rotation player.

Butler wasn't brought in to start or at least get starters minutes. Singler will play the bulk of the game at SF. I just hope Singler gets out of his shooting slump like he did last year.
Butler will be fine as a rotation guy.

I'm actually a pretty big fan of Singler. He seems like the type of guy everyone would rave about if he were on the Spurs. Smart player, works hard on the court, and may have been the team's best shooter last season. He's limited, but a lot of players with limitations have played important roles on very good teams. He's not a bad athlete either.

I hope he can get his shot back because he his naturally horrible defensively. (I mean Singler).

Pre-season. Give him a few regular season games before calling time on his career.

Singler isn't a guy that needs developing or I might agree with you. Singler is what he is. No amount of playing time is going to uncover some incredible hidden talent. For that reason, I'm fine with him wherever SVG wants him.

We paid butler for much more than his skill set. He's a leader in the locker room, he knows what it takes to win, he brings experience and he brings a trust in late game situations. I believe if you look at the mpg he's logged in the last 2-3 years, you'll see he's not goign to be playing as many minutes as you think. Singler, Datome and Him will be fine for now platooning the sF position.

Some players simply get off to slow starts or go through prolonged slumps. Chauncey use to struggle for weeks at a time. He was down right terrible our first 3 rounds of the playoffs in '04 and '05 before heating up in the Finals and he'd frequently have months of terrible shooting. Dice almost always started poorly as well. It happens.

Singler doesn't have bad form or bad shot selection like Jennings/Smith. It's about conditioning and getting comfortable with where his shots are coming in Stan's offense. If 6 weeks from now he's still struggling I'll start to get a little concerned, but I'm still expecting 12-14 ppg with a decent adjFG%.

We talkin' bout preseason...

Come November, when the games ya know actually mean something....Caron will be fine. He'll defend, hit 3s, and provide leadership.

I think he's good for about 15 minutes per game as our starter but we desperately need to package our expirings and picks for a starting SF. I have a feeling we will be pointing to the glaring lack of production from the SF position as the main excuse for any loses we may suffer.

I think as an aging vet, he is coasting during pre-season so he won't tax his bod, cramp up or develop nagging injuries.

I don't even see where the debate is here? He was signed as an asset, not a player.

He's a $4.5 million salary dump for a team looking to avoid a repeater tax. The primary point in signing him was to try and trade him for a future pick or asset.

Anything he can bring to the court and locker room is just icing on the cake. Nothing more.

This team has a huge hole at small forward, and the only way to fix it this season is via trade.

You know what, I have seen on so many team boards where the team signed some player for $4.5 mil contract and every board states the same Salary Dump thing. You know how many teams actually do this salary dump trade, maybe one or two a year. So, we are going to have 20-25 teams who will get stuck with that $4.5 mil player. Butler is going nowhere as he is not worthy of a salary dump unless this team can use him in a trade combined with other players for a SF upgrade. Doubt that happens either. Butler is here for the season. This whole salary dump thing is blown out of proportion on every board.
