Tramon or House next year

Post#1 » by eagle13 » Sat Oct 11, 2014 4:07 pm

House said in JS article today he wants to start and he hopes in GB implying he will leave if he can't start

Next off season they are both FAs. If you had to choose one

IF Tramon would accept a very reduced, very fair salary
and
House wants more than Tramon is asking

Who you got

I don't think this is even close honestly. House is bigger, younger, and still getting better. Seems like a no-brainer.

Let house start but I would try to retain Tramon. God knows we have enough injuries.

Since Week 10 or so last year. Tramon has played really well IMO

He's 31 though, not sure what he'll be demanding

Yeah, I think this is a both situation. I don't think Tramon makes close to what he is making now on a new contract.

Aside from when he was dealing with that shoulder injury, Tramon has been extremely good. He does seem to be a very good influence on the young kids, too. You obviously retain House, but I think you do whatever you can do to keep Tramon on a reasonable deal. Makes a lot now but if he's willing to take a pay cut I'd love for him to stick around.

The answers easy.... Tramon on a reasonable deal. The fact is he much better then house in everyway at this point outside of house being younger. Not that I wouldnt like to keep house and hope he continues to improve but the fact is hes not at a starters level yet and that money would be better spent resigning Cobb and Bulaga. Cant resign everybody and considering I have house at our 4th best CB, (maybe 5th best if we're still going forward with Hyde a cb in the dime), Id think its better to retain tramon. House will simply cost more at this point but the return on tramon is greater. It just money id prefer to spend at other spots

Tramon is a top 10 corner right now in the NFL.

House is a scrub.

I don't even get how House is starting over Hayward. I am so confused.

After watching them today, they aren't even on the same planet talent wise. You gotta bring Tramon back.

I'm not sure what everybody on this board is seeing, but most of you guys are flat out wrong. Tramon is playing at an elite level but House will be passing him very soon and he has better size and is six years younger. I'm not sure what game you were watching.

About House from the JS article:
http://www.jsonline.com/sports/packers/davon-houses-stellar-play-may-lead-to-big-second-contract-b99369055z1-279367532.html
But this season has been House's finest in Green Bay.

According to Pro Football Focus, he has been targeted 18 times and has allowed just eight receptions for 82 yards. He has two forced fumbles, one interception and hasn't allowed an explosive play (more than 20 yards).

House has allowed one touchdown, when he fell down in the end zone against Chicago's Brandon Marshall in Week 4. But the longest reception House has yielded is 17 yards, and opponents are averaging just 3.4 yards after the catch against him.

And from GBPG:

The defense fell into a lull after Williams and Shields left the field Sunday, but it was difficult to find fault with House's or Hayward's performance in the game. According to Pro Football Focus, the two allowed only one catch on five targets, one of which was a Hayward interception.

House pitched a shutout outside of his 21-yard pass interference penalty on receiver Mike Wallace in the third quarter, though Capers, House and the rest of the staff felt it was a questionable call.

We lost against the 49ers in the playoffs last year 90% because Shields went down and House was beat down upon. I know Bush missed his gap on Kap and Hyde dropped the game winning pick but House couldn't cover to save his life in that game.

Packers should of never resigned Shields and gave Hayward more PT.

They both are more than solid. I think Tramon is probably better atm but House has been really showing me something this season. I'd love to keep them both. I'd try to keep Tramon for cheap and bring back House and give him a bigger role.

But we aren't talking about last year, we are talking about this year. This year he has grown into a very good corner with potential to be great. Players develop, he's only 25 years old.

As much as I like Tramon, I might lean towards House if I had to choose. House is younger and still has room to grow into what many of us hope to be a good corner in this league. I think Ted has done a great job for the most part at letting vets go and not giving into their contract demands. Most leave and have no effect on their new teams and we end up filling their spot with a younger player with upside. I think this could be a similar situation if Tramon asks for too much. In a perfect world I'd want to keep both if possible.

I think Tramon is the better player right now. I like House, but the guy just isn't a playmaker. He can't catch anything. If you get rid of Tramon, you're losing another ballhawk in the secondary. We've already seen what losing a ballhawk like Woodson has done, so letting Tramon go would be a major mistake, imo.

This is proving to be a tougher decision than I anticipated. I think everyone easily goes younger if either of two things happen: 1. House really excels or 2. Williams clearly declines. Neither has happened and neither looks like its going to happen for awhile.

I agree the best option is to keep both but that isn’t going to happen as I doubt TT will pay both starter $. House has said he’s gone if he doesn’t start and with as good as Williams is playing why would he take a BIG cut especially since there are many CB starved teams with $ to spend and unafraid to spend it. If both or either of our guys actually enter the free agency period – I predict both will get big offers the first day. TT must know that too. He will have to sign one to more $ than he wants and he’s likely to stick with his pattern of going young.

There is a chance TT lets both walk and play Shields Hayward Hyde at CB and Burnet, Dix Richardson at S. Bring back Banjo and Bush, develop Goodson and draft a CB in the 3rd round. I do not support this unless they use saved $ to sign a young vet stud ILB and/or NT.

I think the answer can be "both" given certain circumstances happening.

1. I doubt Tramon, at 31 years old, is going to get a lucrative multi-year deal on the open market. Restructure his contract and offer him an extra year while having him take a pay cut.

2. How much is House going to get in FA? As the 4th corner on a defense that hasn't been perceived as very stout over the past few seasons, I wonder what his value would be to other clubs. Unless some CB starved team offers him some ridiculous contract (like Tampa Bay gave to Eric Wright), I think he can be had for a reasonable deal. I'd offer him a deal and tell him to wait just one more year so we can move an aging Tramon to slot corner, or if need be waive him.

3. At this point, we don't have many really pressing FA re-signings outside of Cobb and Bulaga. With the way he's playing and, given his injury history, I'm pretty tempted to just move on from Bulaga. I just can't invest high end tackle money in a guy who hasn't been healthy nor played at an elite level in two years. Cutting Brad Jones and restructuring Tramon's deal deal alone should free up the cap space we need for new House and Cobb deals. We already have a healthy cap situation as is with plenty of wiggle room. I'd imagine we restructure Peppers as well after this year.

I wish we could do something like sign Tramon to a 2Y/$16 million dollar deal and sign House to something like a 4Y/$16-$20 million dollar deal so he can take over once Tramon is gone. But that's me wishing and not reality. They'll both probably get more than that and I think we only get to keep one.

I think I'd go with House. The Packers strategy is draft and develop... House has shown he can play, so you have to give him a chance to be a legitimate starter.

One way or another we are pretty damn good at corner going forward. Shields - House - Hayward is pretty awesome.

Restructure what? Tramon is an unrestricted free agent after the season. As for the money he'd get on the open market, i'd bet he gets more than you think. He's not overly old, he's playing pretty well, can still run well enough to cover good receivers, and he's avoided any serious leg/foot injuries. Given how many teams could use help at corner, i could easily see him get something like say 3yrs/21 million with 6-8 guaranteed. Maybe even more. Don't forget that the cap is about to start taking bigger jumps starting next year.

House is harder to peg on what i think he'll end up getting. If he plays well though the rest of the year, with his youth, size, and speed, a team needing help at corner who has lots of cap room could easily throw sizable money at him. Corners generally get targeted hard in free agency in today's pass happy football.

Ted generally sets a max number for a player and won't budge all that much. It will be interesting to see how much he values House compared to House and his agent. Plus, House has made it clear that he wants to be a starting corner after this season. I doubt that he'd resign if Tramon was back and thus being a nickle corner again, but maybe a guarantee of it being an open competition could sway him. Unlikely though both are back.

How does Hayward factor in here? If Tramon isn't back, I don't know if House is the assumed starter. I know Hayward is always hurt but they've been high on him from Day 1 it seems. I'm thinking House is going to get a solid offer, Pack let walk, and Tramon will be back on a friendly deal.
