CrimsonCrew wrote:Re: Vance, the guy is driving me a little crazy. I'm higher on him than many, I think. You can see the potential is there. He's got great size, good athleticism, has developed into a solid blocker, and was a very effective receiver in college. It just seems like every time he touches the ball something goes wrong. He drops an easy pass, or he fumbles a ball while foolishly trying to leap defenders (please stop this immediately), or has an easy TD broken up by his own player. He almost seems snakebit. I'd like to think this sort of thing will dissipate over time, but he's got to start showing that we can rely on him in the passing game.

And while we're on the topic of TEs, I think one of the most overlooked aspects of the Niners' recent success (relatively speaking) is that they have been doing it without Davis. Last year, Davis left the Hawks game early and then missed the Colts game. We scored ten total points in those games. This year, the offense is still productive without him. When he gets back to full health, this unit could be very dangerous. In this game, though, Vernon was more of a hindrance than anything.

It seems that Carrier is playing like Vance last year, it seems like he makes tougher catches while getting blown up or hit sometimes. Maybe I am misremembering Vance, but I know it seems like Carrier always gets a big hit either at the catch or on the YAC and seems unfazed. I thought Vance made some good catches like that or on scrambling drills-like plays, but I might be wrong.

We have to remember who missed most of the season and is still young & raw isn't going to come in and reach his maximum potential right away. I'm actually really encouraged by Vance. Fumbles happen. It was his first & only fumble in the NFL. That's not a repeat of the problem he had with dropping passes last year.

VD has had drop problems. Crabtree led the league in dropped passes as a rookie at one point. Walker dropped passes ALL THE TIME, and we all know that he was still a huge asset to the offense. Vance is a huge asset to the offense. He's huge, fast, a bully as a blocker, and he should only get better.

In Vance's defense concerning the fumble that looked like it was pretty squarely hit by the defender and it wasn't really a case of sloppy ball handling.

I throw Vance into the same pool as guys like Patton and Tank in that it's not they are busts it's just they have vets in front of them playing at a high level.

PFF:

Borland & Ian Williams got really high scores.

William Hayes got a really high score for the Lambs.

They gave the "game ball" to Ian Williams.

I would have to disagree. Even when I was in the stands watching him run I thought he was going to fumble it the way he was holding the ball. When you are coming up on 2 defenders, about to get hit, you have to hold the ball tighter and put 2 hands/arms on the ball which he didn't. It was poor ball handling. No matter how good the hit is he needed to hold on to the ball there.

Vance will be good, not worried about him at all. Ditto for Patton as well. It's a luxury having those types of players waiting in the wings...Tank, however is more concerning. The fact that he cant even get on the field ahead of Dobbs and Jerod-Eddie is somewhat concerning. He was a high 2nd rounder too. But, I am still willing to be patient. He showed potential in preseason and this essentially is his rookie season.

I chalk that up to Fangio. Fangio is militant about guys knowing their assignments. He will sit the more talented player without hesitation if that guy isn't as assignment sound as another guy. Tank showed in the preseason that he has talent and can get after the QB. He just has to get enough reps to learn the system. I would really, really like to see us use him some as the season progresses. If we can go into the playoffs with the prospect of a third-down DL package of Aldon, Lynch, Cowboy, and Tank all going after the passer, we're going to mess teams up.

This week seems like a great week to give Tank some PT. Pass-heavy team, the D is banged up, and we're favored to lose anyway. Why not see what the kid can do?

The more clips I see from the Rams' game the more I realize how truly badly Boone has been playing.

Wonder if Looney, Marcus Martin or even Johnathan Martin should be given a chance to take his job later in the year.

Is it a case of Boone still being a little rusty from holding out all that time (although you shouldn't be after 6 games) or did he get paid and now that same motivation isn't there?

That's just the thing. He didn't get paid. As far as I know, his contract essentially negated the fines he'd already incurred. I don't think he got any extra money at all. Correct me if I'm wrong about that though.

His salary was increased to $3,000,000 for the next 2 years, so it was an increase.

Well that sucks.

I hope the Niners trade his sorry @zz when Marcus Martin gets healthy. Trade deadline would probably be passed though.

They won't trade him as the staff is very averse to playing youth especially rookies and mostly stick with vets.

The only time they play rookies is when they are like Eric Reid and clearly the most talented guy in the position group.

I know they probably won't trade him, but Looney & John Martin are vet's...

Niners still have 11 days to trade Alex Boone if they want to. I'll bet Dallas might make an offer now that Doug Free is hurt.

Looney played well I thought filling in for Boone earlier on. Marcus Martin is more of a natural C, but I am sure he can play G as well.
