The D-League Austin Toros, which have been owned by Spurs Sports and Entertainment since their inception, today were rebranded to take advantage of the strength of the Spurs name.
"The rebranding of the Austin franchise is a terrific opportunity to capitalize on the substantial equity of the Spurs brand," said Rick Pych, who is President of Business Operations for Spurs Sports and Entertainment.
"The name change creates an instantly recognizeable link between the two franchises and is a natural progression based on the important role the Austin team plays in the development of young players, general managers, and coaches who are on their way to reaching their dream of making it to the NBA.
The Austin Spurs will also use the silver and black color scheme, and will use the iconic Spur as their logo.
The team also introduced San Antonio based SWBC as its first ever 'presenting sponsor.'
SWBC co-founders Charlie Amaro and Gary Dudley are minority owners of the Spurs.
Interesting change. I think we're really the only team out there that really uses the D-League for development so it only makes sense that they want a closer relationship.
