I think all he knows is that he can't continue to play. Whenever he feels like he can, he tries to and then he gets set back three or four weeks. There's age, there's life after basketball. The only reason he's playing this year is because he loves to play, so there's a lot racing through his head. The bottom line is he can't put it together.

"It could have ended a lot worse," Kupchak said. "He could have gotten hurt in a game and there could have been some permanent damage. Even now, I think he'll recover and feel fine in three or four months. Clearly when we signed him, we felt there was a two-year window to contend for a championship and that's why he wanted to come to Los Angeles, too. It didn't work out and I know he's felt a lot of pressure to fulfill his obligation contractually. The expectations were so high and I'm sure he's disappointed about that, but it doesn't take away from a great career -- two MVPs, multiple All-Stars, and he'll be in the Hall of Fame.

While there has been talk about Nash staying on as a mentor or an assistant, Kupchak said, "I think he needs to get away."

ALL HAIL wrote:All respect to the man, but Steve Nash would not have been successful replacing the best, most dominant, PGs I've ever seen:

Isaiah Thomas, Gary Payton, John Stockton, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, or Anfernee Hardaway ... certainly not Magic Johnson (the best player and leader ever).

Again, nuff respect to him, but if you take the above-named guys off their prime years teams, and replace them with Nash, all those teams take a step back.

If you do the opposite, putting those guys on the D'antoni Suns, every name above, with the exception of the shooting challenged Kidd and, to a lesser extent, Payton, would probably make that Suns team better overall.

Just sayin'.

Some of those names, you're right, Nash couldn't have replaced especially given the style those teams were running, but a few you are comically off base.

Penny Hardaway is a laughable comparison. The guy was briefly a very good player but no where near an all-time great, and you replace him with Nash on those Magic teams with a young fast and virtually unstoppable O'Neal... good lord, Shaq might have put up 35 a game on 70% shooting.

I watched Kidd first hand, and Kidd is no Steve Nash. Nash was an infinitely more effective offensive player and that includes their passing and ball handling abilities. Yes, Kidd is a much better defender, Kidd can make great passes and is good in transition, but his teams were always dog crap in the half court, forced to slow to a crawl and play isolation because Kidd was not good at creating off the dribble against a set defense or creating his own shot. Nash on the other hand was a guarantor of his team having an elite offense. From 2002-2010 every team Nash played for ranked #1 in offensive efficiency in the NBA... that is an unbelievable streak. Had Nash ever had the fortune of being paired with a big man capable of playing on both ends he probably would have won multiple titles. Anyone who questions Nash's individual chops should look at the 2005-2006 Suns where he almost single handedly dragged a team that featured him, Shawn Marion and an assortment of journeymen and backup quality guys to the brink of the finals.

As much as Nash wouldn't have been able to replace some of the above PGs you list on those teams in those years in the systems they ran, virtually none of them... save Stockton and Magic could have taken the Suns to the places he got them to when he was at his best.

Let's get a big name vet just for the sake of getting someone.

TMac or Agent 0 just for the awesomeness of it.

Nash was one of my favorite players to watch. It took me a bit of time to really appreciate just how good he is and I'm happy I got to see him play at a high level. Thanks for a great career Nash.

I was excited when we got Nash... but I also knew there was a big risk in it, knowing his health. And sure enough, here we are. I just wished the ending wasnt so... bitter.

Here's to one of the all time greats.

Also, I hope this thread doesn't turn into a who-to-get-with-the-dpe thread.

Was it a risky move trading for Nash at his age? Yes.

Could they have known he'd have a leg injury that would affect a lingering back injury that would metastasize into something worse? No.

It's pretty simple: **** luck.

Best post I've seen in regards to the Nash injury on the entire internet. Congrats. If I remember, I'll nominate this to Howard for post of the week.

It's easy for us fans to sometime lose perspective and think that all players just sit around earning those checks. But that's far from the truth and even Kobe realizes this

Nash put in ton of time and effort in the summer to be healthy this season and make it a great year for him and the Lakers since this could be his last season....that's why it's so disappointing to see him go through this.

Don't you feel bad for Steve Nash?

Post#92 » by TheBomb81 » Sat Oct 25, 2014 7:07 pm

It sucks that ever since he became a Laker, the injuries got to him.I never pictured Nash being nagged with so many injuries and I thought he would continue staying healthy like John Stockton as he got older, but everyone's bodies are different. All he wanted to do was make a comeback, hopefully get the ring he has been desiring his whole career.
