Aaron Gray officially waived - Piston roster set.

Post#1 » by Kilo » Sun Oct 26, 2014 10:56 pm

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. – The Detroit Pistons announced today the club has requested waivers on Aaron Gray. The 7-0, 270-pound center missed training camp while rehabbing from a cardiac episode suffered following a voluntary workout in late August.

Gray signed with the Pistons as a free agent on July 10, 2014 and holds career NBA averages of 3.4 points, 3.7 rebounds, 0.7 assists and 12.1 minutes in 318 games with Chicago, New Orleans, Toronto and Sacramento.

I don't like it unless his health is the cause and he needs to hang em up. I don't think Mitchell will ever amount to anything - especially with Detroit seemingly insistent on playing him as a 4/5.

I guess he'll spend the whole year in GR with the Drive and Otis Smith - which was always a plus in his favor of making the final roster. Pistons will have Mitchell, Bostic and Zo Brown down in GR this season along with the first and 5th picks in the first round of the D-League draft.

Your 2014-2015 Detroit Piston opening night roster -

Brandon Jennings, DJ Augustin, Spender Dinwiddie
Jodie Meeks, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cartier Martin
Kyle Singler, Caron Butler, Luigi Datome
Greg Monroe, Josh Smith, Jonas Jerebko, Tony Mitchell
Andre Drummond, Joel Anthony.
Weaver = Hinkie

I can accept that, but I don't understand why we're keeping Mitchell. Dude's dumb as rocks and has shown 0 improvement.

Gray's salary will be on the cap for next season. Thats the price SVG pays for giving a 12th, 13th man 2 year deals for no reason.

Are they able to somehow swing this as a medical exception so that his (small) salary isn't a cap hit? And wasn't his deal some sort of second year option? Does that automatically kick in when he's cut?

Regardless, not too big of a deal to me, a minimum salary on the books doesn't really change much.

Having him and Joel Anthony on the roster when/if he got healthy would have been redundant. At least Mitchell and Datome leave the possibility for some development/progress to be uncovered.

Yes they can petition the league with his medical records... it can take a few months of scrutiny to determine if the team can qualify for a career ending exception (waive his cap hit and allow the team to use the salary for a replacement).

This may a strategy based move. I think we can get his cap hit waived, or at least SVG does. i truly believe that if Gray could still play or there was a chance. They would have kept him since they are paying him. There's no way in hell Mitchell earned any spot including the 15th spot. He's not a SF, he's not a PF, he's horrible defensively and has no offensive game except a jump shot that he can't make or doesn't use. Hopefully they trade him for something of need

The cut makes sense. Gray has a serious health issue, and we just traded for Joel Anthony.

I was kind of hoping it was Tony Mitchell, because he's a lazy bum that doesn't deserve a spot on any NBA team.

Seriously, put Greg Monroe's brain in Mitchell's body and he probably averages 25 & 15.

The Raptors cut Hamilton and he looked good in preseason at SF would look good in Pistons uniform.

Stan seems to only be content with giving PT too players who have been training and playing already so theres probably no chance of him seeing the floor anyways.

Wow that's rather salty :) but everyone is entitled to there own prospective.
But think SVG would be extremely happy to have Vasquez, Williams, James Johnson, Patterson, Hansbrough & Stiemsma on his second unit. He didn't make the team because we needed a back-up for Valanciunas with size and Stiemsma is a 7fter. Both A. Johnson and Hansbrough can fill in again smaller units and Nogueira is a rookie.
Hamilton would be behind Ross, J. Johnson, Fields defensively at SF and Bruno Caboclo is a 18 yo. raw rookie with potential.

Gray's health must be really bad. Early SVG comments suggested he wasn't high on positionless athletes which is what we have in Tony Mitchell. It seems Gray's health disqualified him from making the squad as opposed to Mitchell actually earning a spot.

Maybe Mitchell will learn to play the game.
Maybe he'll end up an asset in a trade.

Either way, I'm not too broken up over this since neither guy would have made the 10 man rotation.

Or a new KG.

Mitchell is an amazing physical specimen. But, zero BBIQ.

What's the deal with that? We give deals to Gray and Jodie Meeks and don't scout the fact that they aren't good to go for the year? SVG is 0/2 on those two FA signees. Do the Pistons have a competent medical staff? Did they do their homework?

^Meeks got hurt after we signed him, probably in our camp. Gray had a heart episode before, but checked out medically in order to be signed - unfortunately he had another. I guess we can't risk he had another even if he checks out healthy again and wants to keep playing.

It came out saltier than i intended. My point is, he got pushed out buy guys like Johnson and Fields. he'd be behind bulter/singler/martin here

So sign him to a guaranteed two year deal then waive him before the season. Incredibly stupid.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy
