Kings owner proposing idea of 4 defenders & 1 cherry picker

The Kings are going to be entertaining!

Owner Vivek Ranadivé has pitched the idea to the team’s brain trust of playing 4-on-5 defense and leaving one player to cherry-pick, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter. The Kings aren’t actually going to do that, but their D-League might, and it shows Ranadivé is committed to pushing boundaries in his search for an offbeat brand of “position-less” ball.

Pretty cool idea, but im sure it wouldn't work for a team that takes care of the ball and passes it around a lot.

stupidest thing ever, what a dope. Stick to being rich and stop thinking about basketball.

Easy way to defend that is play 5-4 offense. The minute the shot goes up, a player runs back on defense. By the time the shot misses and the defensive rebound is made the cherry picker wont be open.

If the offense makes the shot (which will be likely since one guy will be wide open). The player breaks back for defense the minute the shot is up and by the time the team inbounds the ball the cherry picker will be covered.

The only time the cherry picker would work would be off a turnover, which wouldn't happen much because there would only be 4 defensive players on 5 guys.

It would be shooting practice for the opposition.

I'm surprised the Sixers haven't done this. 0-82 season almost guaranteed.

Well in principle -- you might be playing 4 on 5 on one end of the court but you could be playing 1 on 0 at the other end.

I actually think it's interesting because the teams playing the Kings (for example) would have to consider or at least partially account for the cherry picker.

I get it - it sounds really stupid but it's an interesting thought. Can't think of how many pick up games I'm in where a guy on the opposing team keeps leaking out early (cherry picking) and the guy guarding him fails to get back - giving up cheap basket after cheap basket.

I suppose Kings are talking about something where they are more actively leaking out early -- trying to steal easy buckets.

Next idea up will be the old Kansas (?) womens basketball where they play 3v2 on each end of the court --- or something like that.

This owner might just be an idiot. The war room footage of him talking everyone into taking Nik Stauskas was cringeworthy.

On the other hand, it would give more of advantage to those wing defenders who really cannot play offense. If you have 1 ball handler, one athletic wing defender, and two larger rim protectors you could hypothetically seem to defend more than you actually defend.

this is a man who came to america with 100 in his pocket at 16 and went to become a billionaire(maybe) with advanced degrees from mit and harvard. i have to assume that he came to this decision based on some sort of analytics.

This proposal is preposterous, and he definitely shouldn't be telling his staff who to draft.
