Look, they are LA. They are eventually going to get a star who wants to bright lights of Hollywood and they are going to go back to their winning ways. It's not a matter of if, it's a matter of how soon. I just don't think they'll get it together in the next 3 seasons.

Also, the last few seasons has shown having money isn't enough to build an elite team. A lot things had to fall perfectly in place in Miami for Lebron, Wade and Bosh to team up. Last offseason, a half dozen teams had money but didn't necessarily have the roster to entice Lebron after he left Miami. Having $50m in cap space, no established talent to play or trade with (Randle + next year's pick are not proven) and the pressure of playing in the spotlight of LA could even be a deterrent for top flight FA's.

If the Lakers and Knicks pull off (I know it's a leap) a Amare+ for Kobe trade that would translate into the Lakers having (at least) 55 million to spend on free agents, it's rocket fuel. Your example of Miami's coup is over the top in this discusssion. I'm just talking about the Lakers getting good quickly...not forming a super group...a title favorite. If they have 55+ million to spend they can round up 3 very good players...Rondo? M.Gasol? Aldridge? And a host of other candidates. Part of their spiel would be "Hey! Rajon? Marc? Kawhi? (Whoever)...we're bringing in 3 of you in one fell swoop to get things right quickly. And we have young talent in Randle and J.Okafor?"

If you're counting on the Lakers being in T-Wolve-Kings-Sixersville for 3 or 4 years you're dreaming.

They won't be as bad as those teams which are always "rebuilding" but they will suck for a few years before they get back to dominance. They are going to suck with Kobe on the roster (regardless whether they have cap space or not) for the next season and even after that, they aren't suddenly going to suddenly sign an Anthony Davis type top 1-3 player of the future.
