Declining Bills wasn't surprising at all, but I'd totally be okay with bringing him back on the cheap and seeing what, if anything, he has left. What if he can reinvent himself as a stretch relief arm? Chances are good it won't cost much to find out, and I'm just a fan of the guy. I'd like to see him stick around.
Isn't Kyle Kendrick a free agent this winter? I'd personally rather go after Brandon McCarthy or even Ervin Santana, but Kendrick should be able to be had without giving anything up, and I wouldn't be mad at it.
EA should be the starting shortstop in April with the way he's getting paid. Maybe he can't hit, but it's something the club has to figure out this season, and with his glove, I think they can afford to, especially considering there aren't many attractive alternatives available.
I dunno, the more i think about this issue, i think it is imperative that we sign another Ace for the starting rotation. with a signing like Brandon McCarthy, an idiot like Mattingly will be compelled to overlook him and lean on Kershaw to go on a short rest again.
I frankly think the one to go after as of now, is David Price. having been traded mid season, I don't think the tigers can tie up a first round pick. and when the playoffs come, i think we should setup our rotation according to the playoff success each player had. it should go Price - Greinke - Ryu - Kershaw. I know this sounds bizarre, but hear me out.
Kershaw maybe the greatest we have seen during the regular seasons but he has not done well in playoffs, a sign of a young kid with a relatively fragile mental makeup who feels the pressure of playoff stigma. he needs to have less pressure on him and start facilitate an environment where he can gain some success there. have him pitch game 3 or 4 with maybe 5 to 6 innings of work, then even if he is well, pull him. this way, we keep re-enforcing a positive memories in him and start making him feel success in playoffs is the norm. once we can accomplish this, only then we can throw him back out at the wolves and tread his own water. if we don't do this right and let Donnie Nutballs keep sending him out there on short rests and leave him out there until he breaks, he will break eventually. he isn't a grizzly vet despite his accomplishments already. he is still a kid at what, 27?
Ryu had a ton of success as the only star of his lowly South Korean team the eagles since his rookie year, he is used to pressure.
Price was the ace of attendance lacking Tampa, the classic unwanted team from a small market, and led them to a world series birth. he can handle the pressure.
Greinke is that grizzly vet we can throw out there, but with his social anxiety, I think he fits better as your #2 starter as he has proven he can already.
so Kershaw needs to be tampered for a year or two in the playoffs, but the dividends from it could be a dominance for the remainder of his contract and beyond. it's worth it.
Price - Greinke - Ryu - Kershaw. and if we are up 2-0 in the first round, skip Ryu and go with Kershaw.
I am telling you guys, this will payoff in the long run.
and Price is right for Price, with no draft pick to be lost.
about Zach, I think he is still young and have at least the ceiling for Billinglsey's prime, but i don't really mind as a trade bait as we have Urias coming up in a couple of years. the problem i see with this scenario i threw in is that, in 2 years, our rotation would be too lefty heavy as Kerahw - Price - Ryu - Urias are all lefties, leaving Greinke as our lone righty.
ehhhhh f it.
