Slants, hitches, screens
So do you think that would all be too much to ask tomorrow, or will we see some? I like the idea of trying to run the ball down the Cardinals throat, but at some point, the Cowboys may need to actually pass the ball, and if they're seeing 0 blitzes again, we're going to need to see some of the above.

Re: Slants, hitches, screens
I want to see how we handle this vaunted run defense of Arizona. I mean can we really continue to " do what we do". I think we can. To me though it's not how many yards Murray gets, it's more how many 4 and 5 yard gains he gets to me. He could easily get 100 yards because of a 60 yard run and 20 other 2 yard runs.

Re: Slants, hitches, screens
We need to find a way to beat the blitz or we will see it more and more. There are many ways to do it, but they all require everyone knowing their role and execution. We did a **** job executing Monday night. There was a lot of talk about leaving more blockers in, but that has its downsides too. Remember how the 46 defense was made obsolete. Teams stopped trying to block everyone and started putting more guys out in routes than the defense could cover without hurting themselves. If you execute that works well. If you don't you need to have a lot of QBs on the roster...

We did pretty well at Seattle running the ball, but that was with a healthy Romo. I'm convinced we would have won last week if we were dedicated to the run. I wrote on another board where we passed on something like 80% of second downs. It was as if the coaches didn't watch our own games the way we played Monday night. On 2nd and 8 if you run the ball and get 3rd and 6 (or less) that is a crappy avg per carry, BUT 3rd and 6 versus 3rd and 10 is why we have been so successful this year. Run the damn ball.

Re: Slants, hitches, screens
I really haven't looked but I would say our 3 rd down percentage wasn't as good on Monday either. Now 57 percent is pretty hard to attain, but just thinking about it- I doubt we were even close to that number.
I don't know, Monday was just a weird game to me. It was almost like they were doing things to keep Murray's carries down. I know we only had the ball for 28 minutes, but Randle and Dunbar were both in early. I saw more of Beasley as well. I think Escobar had 6 snaps. I did see Hannah out there so maybe it was the same as always. I just prefer the 12 personnel with Escobar. I mean we can all second guess the OT play calling but it was like that a lot of the game. I'm not saying Linehan was thinking in his head - well we can't run here because that adds a carry. I just think they thought romo would have a field day with the two young Cbs.

Re: Slants, hitches, screens
Thanks.
You know, earlier in the week, I had read a stat that basically stated the Cowboys have actually been pretty good about picking up the blitz this season. Perhaps last Monday was simply a case of the starting QB, and some backs, just not handling the blitz very well? In other words, possibly a one off kind of a game.

I think you are right. I put it way more on Romo and the WRs not adjusting, as well as Murray.

It wasn't a weird game to me, at all. It was essentially the same game plan that we have seen the last year three years. There is no reason that when Weedon came into the game and Murray made that long run to set us up on the five yard line we should have gone to pass plays. Murray was averaging 5.6 ypc before the long run. A TD there would have won the game for us.
Then, in OT, Murray runs on first down and picks up 7-8 yards. What do we do? We pass three straight times for incompletions to lose the game. The fourth down pass was the worst. Our receivers were all twelve yards downfield and all we needed was 2-3 yards. It was a **** call that reminded me of the last three years.
Give the damn ball to Murray. Hell, I would have settled for Dunbar or Randle.

Re: Slants, hitches, screens
I wondering why Dunbar hasnt been in more plays. He seems to bring a Sproles type player to our team ( minus his injuries)
Seems like he took a step back this year.
