Quake Griffin wrote:Price is a no go in QG's world. Here's why with a few things you got wrong in sizing him up***

1) he has another year with Detroit

2) he's struggled in the playoffs. Thank God he played in Tampa or he would have never heard the end of it.

3) He was only a reliever for the 08 team.
Shields, Kazmir, Garza, Sonnanstine handled the starts for that 08 team.

Now, i'm all about another ace....which is why I'm looking at Shields, Lester....asking about Sale...because I'm willing to try almost anything to bring in another ace.

I'm completely with you. It has to be another ace. If it's another serviceable pitcher who does well for us, he'll be pitching Kershaw again on 3 days rest in the NLDS....this is why it has to be an ace....someone with enough respect from Mattingly and a mandate from the public to where he can't justify sitting him in Game 4 of the NLDS.

it's truly protecting donnie from himself.

CC.
I meant Howie Kendrick. I'm a proponent of him taking over the duties at 2B. He's just a better player than Dee Gordon imo and has pop in his bat.
but I'm with you too....I want EA to start at SS. His glove is good enough to put up a 2 WAR imo even if he doesnt hit at all at the major league level.

Jeez, i didn't think Price had another year left! just checked the baseball reference and what do you know, he isn't a FA eligible until 2016. wtf. i guess my memories are failing me in my middle age already.

the issue at hand with Kendrick is then what do we do with Dee? I say sell him high while we can along with some toxic contracts to some sucka GM who thinks Dee's 60+ SB means gold.

Dee ranked above the average in terms of OPS+ for the first time in his career at whopping 101. that is exactly 1 point higher than the average major leaguer.

Kendrick on the other hand posted 115 OPS+ while posting his career worst SLG%. I think he can bounce back a bit on his slg% while keeping his OBP which was around .350.

which is more important?

i honestly the value between them isn't very large, but Kendrick still edges out dee despite all the flashes of his speed. Dee is younger by about 5 years, which is an asset but 2nd baseman with a decent pop with high OBP can play into his mid 30s easy. that gives us 4-6 years of serviceable years out of Howie and I like it. with his OBP he can be our leadoff, or bat in the 6th, or 7th, or if we have a good hitting catcher even the 8th hole. IF dee cannot leadoff, the only other spot for him is the 8th hole in NL.

one can make an argument that Dee is young and his OBP as well as SLG can improve in time while keeping his speed at its top notch shape. it can be a solid argument too. but however the main key that i see from all this is...
1) dumping bad contracts. put Dee in a package with say, Ethier or Crawford. no or little money going their way.
2) improving the infield defense. Erisbel and Kendrick would be rock solid up the middle of the infield.
3) covering Erisbel's offensive shortcomings. with Erisbel and Dee, it's hard to cover the weak bats but Kendrick can cover for Erisbel's plastic toy bat.
4)although it's a long shot, Kendrick's presence can time the arrival of Darnell Sweeney(the long shot guy). still at AA at age 23, he will be around 25 when he is ready for the majors. if Kendrick doesn't stay after 2015 season, 2016 would be the year Darnell arrives if all goes well as planned along with Seager.

Dee might be my favorite Dodger currently, so I can't really condone trading him. It's just one of those irrational fan things. If he absolutely had to go, Howie is one of the only guys I could see taking some of the sting off. I do really think that pre All-Star break Dee is closer to what we'll get next year, as opposed to the guy who whiffed at everything and couldn't get on base once the calendar hit August. Dude just works too hard not to come back a better player.

keep in mind, we are just playing what if scenarios. hypothetically IF the dodger front office wanted to upgrade the 2nd base, this would be the right way to go about.

however, I don't see Dee going anywhere for a long time. if Dee can get on base just .020 more points, and get savvy about the major league pitchers and their pickoff move tendencies, I can see him stealing 100+ a year. Im sure Andrew sees that and the fact that he made an all-star this year pretty much makes any trade involving Dee a PR disaster.

the way I see it, and hopefully this is the way Andrew sees it, is that our priority as of now is

#1) sign an ace to make 4 aces rotation to go with Haren. this makes Don's idiocy neutralized.
#2) bullpen help. I see addition by subtraction here. if we simply find ways to dump wilson and league those roster spots can be filled by guys like Yimi Garcia and Dominguez.
#3) dump Crawford and Ethier. i don't see how but that's why Andrew is paid 35 million to do this.
#4) get rid of one of the two cuban shortstops. i say guerrero is the one to be traded, as Erisbel's glove is Ozzy Smith like.
#5) lower the salary as Guggenheim wants to. this may involve a lot more than simply trading away bad contracts.

so in other words, upgrade at 2B is nowhere near the list and Im sure you and your favorite dodger is safe.

Hanley has his QO.

i think this just means he's ours.
What AL team is going to offer him big funds? Not hypothetically speaking here. I mean out of the 15 teams, who is gonna do it?

is it true that the top 11 teams drafting wont forfeit a pick for signing someone who has been extended a QO?

if that's true.

Rangers
Astros
Twins
Red Sox
White Sox

these are the AL teams in the top 11.

I wanna move on from Hanley and pick up his slack elsewhere.
please please please somebody pick him up.

typical small market move, but knowing our payroll being maxed, we probably should be happy.

this kid is your typical utility infielder. SS/2B/3B guy. hopefully better defense than Justin Turner, but basically the same guy without the bat. a quick glance at his minor league stat tells me he has some ok power with ok contact. came up through the Cardinals organization. was out of option and got picked up by the Padres and seems to have forgotten how to hit altogether. He will probably be an emergency utility guy who will start at our AAA team. nothing serious, I don't think.

yes it is true. top picks for the worst 11 teams are a guaranteed (protected?) picks. but they will lose their next highest pick.

ya I never heard of him either so i did some background check, and I am HIGHLY impressed. Just like the SABR pioneers like Paul DePodesta and Theo Epstein, this guy has his background in economics, except more impressive.

Farhan got his BS at MIT. then got a damn phD at Berkley.

Billy Bean credits Zaidi as the man behind Yoenis Cespedes signing, (according to Wiki) and has been with the A's for a decade, mostly working on the analytics. (which means their perennial success as a small market team has to be, at least in part, be credited to this guy)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farhan_Zaidi

and his cat is younger than me at 37.

we have a freaking doctor of economics as our new GM. I love this move. only regret i have is that we already had this guy a decade ago. And stupid McShits used him as a scapegoat because he was socially awkward. **** Bill Plaschke... :nonono:

just wanna add, that i just checked out every free agent this off season's wWAR, and Max Scherzer is twice better than Jon Lester, lol. nobody comes close to his guy with Heterochromia Iridum.

I say lets find a way to dump about 50 million in salary to sign this guy.

I was just thinking about Scherzer the other day. It would be great to have another elite right hand arm in our rotation.

I told you, if the 4th starter (he's better than Ryu, he'd be our 3rd starter) is good enough, I'd have 0 reservations about getting rid of hanley n going with a defense team.

Should be a Prerequisite for ALL sports GM jobs that they actually have PLAYED the game. Too much riding on their decisions!

hahahahaha what does Ryan Theriot know about winning? a utility infielder who went to LSU thinks he knows better. and i believe he got there on athletic scholarship, not even with his own merit... what a laughable POS.

tell me the last GM who "played" the game and won.

Brian Sabean of San Francisco? NO
John Mozeliak of the Cardinals? NO
Both Boston Redsox GMs who won it all, Ben Cherington and Theo Epstein? NO and NO
Brian Cashman of the Yanks? a HeLL NO

this list can go on and on and on.

in fact, it is far more difficult to name the last GM who played at the MLB even as a september call up and won it all.

a jock is a jock is a jock. there is a reason why Nolan Ryan couldn't get it done, or Don Mattingly cannot get it done.

PS - I find the ignorance of morons who thinks money ball automatically means a low budget team infinitely hilarious and pitiful at the same time. they have no clue what so ever that the Redsox already won twice under the money ball management. the definition of the money ball is a team that runs its front office to maximize its whatever the budget via analytical evaluation based on economics, aka cost vs benefits. if a team has a small budget like the A's, it accommodates its financial ability to its max. if a team has a much bigger budget like the Redsox or the current Dodgers, the money ball will maximize its efficiency, which should be scary for the rest of the league. however, most piss poorly educated beer-chugging community college dropouts whose highest math class is maybe Algebra2, thinks they know and understand money ball. :rofl2:

I'm not as much mad as I am happy for Hank. he deserved to start somewhere. the Asstros are saying they will have Hank compete, but for the fact that they traded away a major league ready pitching prospect and a catching prospect in the minors, tells me they are projecting him as the starter and Jason Castro as a trade bait by the deadline.

meanwhile, I hope Andrew and our new phD GM doctor Zaini do not think AJ will simply bounce back. even though AJ's salary is minuscule compared to say, Kershaw, Greinke, Gonzo, Crawford, or Kemp, paying 3.55 million dollars a year for a catcher who just finished the season with sub .200 BA is not going to fly for the Guggenheim who wants to trim the salary, especially when we have the same guy in Drew Butera who was paid 700,000 and just might be a slightly better defensive catcher.

maybe we will see TIm Federowicz getting his fair share of chance, finally. I am not sold on him entirely, but going by the last 3-4 years of AAA numbers, he practically matches Joc Pederson in terms of his offensive output minus the home runs. when given a decent enough of at bats two years ago, he did post a respectable .231 .275 .356 .631 with 4 HRs. I know it sounds terrible, but remember what AJ just posted. besides, Tim Fed was never traded to us because of his batting. it was his traditional glove work that him through the minors and got him eventually here.

also it was because Ned is an idiot, but...

oh and just a little tidbit from yesteryears that i remember, which made me hate Ned and become a fan of Logan White, was the incident back in the summer of 2007. Ned wanted to trade a young 19 year old prospect with an incredible promise in a package along with then an up and coming stud who ended up hitting 330+ BA and 15 Hrs that season, in James Loney for Mark Teixiera. the young 19 year old pitching prospect's name? Clayton Kershaw. it was Logan White who vehemently fought against Ned to keep Clayton in dodger blue 7 years ago.

does this give an idea as of why i hated Ned for so long for being an idiot of a talent evaluator?

yes it does.

ill respond to the conger thing later.
Dodgers Nation just posted on Facebook that we're interested in Alexei Ramirez....i didn't check him out at all before coming to post this.

from what i remember....he's old and has a somewhat solid bat but he plays good SS defense.

I didn't see that yet but if this is legit, it closes the book on both Guerrero and Erisbel experiment. i might add, neither were Logan's picks. by the time these two were evaluated and signed, Logan was relegated to domestic duties.

yet another legacy of burden provided by Ned Colletti.
