Clippers Loss is Jazz's Gain

Post#22 » by Ranma » Thu Nov 6, 2014 5:05 am

Jody Genessy, Deseret News (11/5/14)
“I like him,” Clippers coach Doc Rivers said before Monday’s 107-101 win over Ingles and his new team. “We were definitely trying to find ways to keep him. I think he’s going to be a good player.”
...

Rivers admitted the Clippers were hoping nobody would claim Ingles off of waivers while they tried to figure out a way to re-sign him, which would’ve required cutting a player. He laughed and blamed former Jazz general manager Kevin O’Connor.

“We took the game and lost if you want me to be frank. We thought we could sneak him,” Rivers said, adding that the Clippers waived him during a busy time when perhaps others might not notice the transaction. He added about the Jazz, “They won.”
...

Ingles credited Snyder for being a detail-oriented coach who’s helping the young Jazz group learn the importance of “the little things” it takes to become winners.

“He’s a perfect guy for this situation,” Ingles said.

Jazz winners as Clippers 'gamble' and lose on cutting Joe Ingles

So Doc was trying to pinch pennies in bringing him back to a lesser deal rather than just keep him to begin with? Dude was already not making that much, anyway. Doc's GM skills continue to baffle me.

But he would still have had to drop someone else.

Team can't go over the hard cap at all, so the extra cap space under the hard cap could be the difference in being able to take on a little extra salary in a trade and not being able to make a trade.

I read this as Clips lining up a 2 for 1 trade to bring the squad to 14, then bringing Ingles back as #15.

Either the potential trade was dropped after Ingles was claimed, or they couldn't find a suitable partner before the deadline.

Ingles has been great in Utah. He just knows the game. He is getting minutes

Define "great".

He might know the game, kinda of like Luke Walton also knew the game, but he's 2/10 FG and 0/7 3PT so far for them, but has 8 assists to 2 turnovers in 69 minutes. His passing looks good, which we knew, but none of that so far gives assurance that he can defend, shoot efficiently or rebound well at the NBA level.

6 games / 69 minutes means little. His per 36:

2.1 pts / 3.1 rebs / 4.2 ast / 1.0 tov / .200 TS% / 1.9 PER

We'll still have to wait and see.

I think people wanted to see Doc take a little more chances on adding players to this roster. Yes we're in 'win now' mode and the players Doc signed made the team basically cause they've been in the NBA before. Hedo, Big Baby, Udoh, CDR. But how much these guys will contribute to the team is still up in the air. Its like "you guys are in the NBA family so welcome to the Clippers". He needed to gamble a little bit imo. I'm glad Jared Cunningham made the roster. I think we can all agree he has some upside but that comes with more playing time. Joe Ingles should've been on the Clipps as well. Wish he hadn't jumped the gun on CDR and Udoh signings.

Ingles imo did nothing to prove he should have made the team. He didn't play, and when he did, he was pretty much useless from what I saw. He continues to not really do anything in Utah.

Remember it was Ingles vs Cunningham. Doc took the young, raw, mistake prone 23 year old guy over the 27 year old, more polished, higher IQ guy.

I think that is the definition of gamble. Like you said, Cunningham is nice. The issue with jumping the gun on guys like CDR and Udoh is that they did need to fill the rosters with at least some guys who were known commodities. It's a tough thing to leave 3 roster spots open to gamble on training camp guys.

With the hard cap of $82 mil for this season, the team just did not have the flexibility to be adding and dropping players at will.
