The Washington Wizards could be closer to a deal that would build a new state-of-the-art training facility for the team.
It would be funded by raising taxes on tickets to the games. WNEW Senior Correspondent Mark Segraves reports the new facility would cost between $30-$40 million and seat about 5,000 people.
The negotiations are in the preliminary stages but several sources tell Segraves that it would be located where Shaw Skate and Dog Park currently is in Northwest, D.C. near the Shaw/Howard Metro Station.
The Wizards play their home games in the same building where they train — at the Verizon Center.
Ted Leonsis, the team’s owner, has said that he wants to do what a lot of NBA teams are now doing, which is build a separate state-of-the-art training facility. Just a few years ago, Leonsis built a training facility for the Capitals in Arlington.
According to Segraves, the plan being presented by D.C. officials would have the District’s government borrow the money for construction which would be paid back most likely by an increased tax on tickets and concessions at Wizards games.
The land the facility would be built on is owned by the District. If the plan goes through, the facility could be use for other events like the Washington Mystics’ games and high school games.

Is that the skate park at 11th & Rhode Island? That's so close my lazy ass might even go to some Mystics games. I like the idea that it's more out in the community, although it will be leveling some frequently used courts along with the skate park. Maybe they can provide some new ones in the deal.

Since Ted isn't paying a dime (apparently), maybe he'll pony-up for a single-affiliation NBDL team.

Really excited about paying MORE to go to games.
When Ted shows real committment to winning-- like allowing the franchise to dip into lux tax land or purchasing a D league team, I'd feel better about being the man's ATM for something like this.
Also, gotta look at the plans - footprint, street presence, uses contemplated- to judge the project independent of my feelings that Ted, to date, has made more withdrawals from the community than deposits.

I bet WTA was out there leading the cheers with them. Keep fighting the power, old man.

I could have gone pro.
I was that good.
On top of that the boards were wider and much heavier back then so you can only imagine the type of tricks I could have performed on today's lighter, thinner, popsicle stick shaped decks.
Of all the yups I went to school with (there are lots of them) I am the only one I know of who still sets foot on a board every once in a while.
One of those yups is a very high profile lawyer/attorney and I can only imagine the look on his face if I were to stop by his office with a board under my arm and a lit cigarette in my other hand.
One of these days I just might do that.

If I really wanted to show him I would just walk in there with a smoking hot 18 year old latina on my arm and point out my full head of hair in comparison to his receding hairline but I do not want to add insult to injury.

Leonsis targets D.C., Arlington for Wizards practice facility
Driven by what he’s termed an “arms race” to build the biggest and best practice facilities for NBA teams, Wizards and Mystics owner Ted Leonsis has begun touring sites in Arlington and D.C. and inquiring with local officials about what kind of support they might provide for a facility of his own.
Leonsis is narrowing in on sites in Crystal City, Ballston and the Shaw neighborhood of Northwest D.C., according to a source close to the team. The team currently practices at a court that at the Verizon Center.
Speaking on the condition of anonymity because the search is meant to be private, the source said Leonsis envisioned a venue resembling one the Chicago Bulls opened in September, as a way of trying to attract and keep better players.

Considering the players live in Va anyway, Arlington may be the better bet.
Bullets -> Wizards
