The show this morning on Charlotte Talks (a local talk show on NPR) was dedicated to discussing the Hornets rebrand (LINK). I only heard about 15 minutes of it, but it was pretty interesting and I'll try to listen to the rest later. Cho was on with Fred Whitfield (President, Chief Operating Officer and Alternate Governor) and Pete Guelli (Executive Vice President and Chief Sales and Marketing Officer).

Wasn't sure the best place for this so I'll stick it here.

Check out this quote from the Charlotte Business Journal this morning talking about the new Fox Sports South app:

TV has been a persistent weak link for the Charlotte franchise since the NBA returned here in 2004. The Hornets, known as the Bobcats until this season, first launched a team-owned cable digital network that went out of business after nine months.

Later, the team moved its games to a 24-hour cable news channel available only to Time Warner Cable subscribers. Fox took over distribution in April 2008, increasing the availability of games by 50 percent within three years. About 3 million homes in the Carolinas can see Hornets games now.

The earlier TV stumbles and losing seasons on the court have left the Hornets scrambling to build a consistent audience. Two years ago, SportSouth broadcasts of Hornets games were watched by an average of 6,000 people in Charlotte, worst in the NBA.

Through 49 games this season, average audiences have grown to 13,000, up from 9,000 at this point a year ago. (App viewing is not included in viewer numbers.) By comparison, the Carolina Panthers of the NFL were watched by 392,000 fans per game during the 2014 season. The NFL is the most popular sports league on TV. The local disparity shows how far the Hornets have to go in a TV market with 2.8 million total viewers.

Pete Guelli, the Hornets' chief sales and marketing officer, told me TV "is the one area of our business that hasn't grown as aggressively as other parts."

Any chance the Hornets wear St. Patrick's Day jerseys this year? I've noticed we have a game on St. Patrick's Day and I saw the Bulls were already wearing their green jerseys a few days ago. Man, I love green jerseys.

EDIT: I could have sworn the Bobcats wore St. Patrick's Day jerseys at least once in the past. I'm coming up with nothing in Google image search.

Yeah, that's it. It hit me during my lunch break and I was going to come back and re-edit my post. Anyway, I'll take a new and updated Charlotte Hornet's Green Week jersey if we're not getting the St. Patrick's Day ones.

That works as segue for me to post this screen-shot I took of a completely unimpressed Gerald Wallace a few games back.

Glad they did it. Got me to buy season tickets that year and in every one since except the year Kemba left when I went to half season pack. Lots of losing but some good highlights too. Plus, we got All Star game and ASG Saturday Night tix.

NOW- they need to actually live up to the name!
