Waiters anthem story is BS

Post#1 » by jbk1234 » Sat Nov 8, 2014 5:25 pm

Apparently, Waiters stayed in the locker room after he was removed from the starting line up for religious reasons in Utah, and a very irresponsible reporter from the PD, who has been gunning for Waiters since the preseason, transformed his prayer into something entirely different.

From last night per CBS:

"Waiters informed Northeast Ohio Media Group that he is a Muslim and that he plans to excuse himself prior to the national anthem from here on out.

"It's because of my religion," Waiters told NEOMG. "That's why I stayed in the locker room."

From today: "Waiters informed Northeast Ohio Media Group that he is a Muslim and that's the reason he excused himself prior to the national anthem.

"It's because of my religion," Waiters told NEOMG. "That's why I stayed in the locker room."

Worse yet, they changed the context of quote and partially corrected the meaning WHILE LEAVING THE HEADLINE THE SAME.

"I'm always out there for the national anthem"

Seems like this would be easy enough to verify.
"Thibs called back and wanted more picks," said Jorge Sedano. "And Pat Riley, literally, I was told, called him a mother-bleeper and hung up the phone."

The PD is tying itself in knots right now trying to explain how it got nothing wrong but why it changed the content of the story from last night to today.

If they changed any context it must be very subtle, so subtle that I can't see it from those two examples you posted anyway.

First the overblown "Kyrie and Dion feud from last year" that the media pretty much invented... then the "Kyrie and LeBron had a heated exchange" story that sounds like BS to me.... now this. I think there was even some non-sense about LeBron being mad and leaving because Tristan Thompson didn't get an extension. What nonsense...

I don't know how people can't see this for what it is, the media trying to concoct stories of strife... Did the same thing with the Heat AND the Cavs the last few years. Chris Haynes needs to take his (rear) back to Portland. Keep in mind, many of these guys and their "sources" were the ones saying no way LeBron would return to Cleveland. Windy(and some other dudes) was actually on air when SI broke the story of LeBron's return talking about how LeBron was still held up on returning to Cleveland because of Gilbert's letter. Something that had been addressed and squashed over a week prior to the announcement. Shows you his sources and I doubt a dude who just showed up at the PD(Haynes) has "better" sources. If anything, he's hoping to stir up some stories so that he can make a name for himself and get that Windhorst-type ESPN gig too.

Waiters is asked why wasn't at the national anthem (or team introductions which they originally omitted) and his response is that he was in the locker room for religious reasons. Now a player misses introductions and the anthem for one game, and that somehow becomes the player won't attend the national anthem going forward. What is the basis for that claim if that isn't what the player said?

Well, he's been out there for every in-person game I've seen him play including probably about a dozen in Cleveland, one in Charlotte and one in Atlanta. He was out there for the Portland game and he was out there for the Denver game. The only game I've ever heard or seen of him not being out there is the Jazz game. Some trend...

Yeah this is just another "report" that seems to be a continuing trend among sports reporters now. Find a tiny thing and make something up about it and pass it off as journalism.

Though Cavs fans should have known this (along with the Kyrie/Lebron "feud") were coming when Lebron came back.

Don't worry, we knew it was coming when he came back. In fact, I'd prefer these stories over the contrived LeBron to the Knicks stories we dealt with for 7 years. You know the ones, "LeBron watched a Spike Lee movie this weekend and said it was good. "HE'S CLEARLY POSITIONING HIMSELF TO LEAVE FOR THE KNICKS NEXT SUMMER AS A RESTRICTED FREE AGENT AND THE CAVS WILL JUST LET HIM WALK, BECAUSE YOU KNOW, THE KNICKS." That kind of stuff...

This non-sense is actually somewhat entertaining and less distracting to the team. What's next? Kevin Love is unhappy with the pre-game spread and appeared to have digestive issues after the game. Did Dion Waiters contaminate the pre-game spread?!?! Just please click our story at (Yahoo, ESPN, Cleveland.com, etc.) to find out more about this very important development.

News gonna news... It used to be the sports media, wasn't as bad as the mainstream media but they're quickly becoming as bad or worse. Less reporting of what's happening and more trying to make stories that fit a narrative. Do they actually teach this stuff in J school now or do they have to wait to make it to the big leagues before they get their "newsmaker" card?

So you're telling me that the media likes to make up stories and exaggerate conflict? No way!

I think Cleveland fans are used to it by now. You can spot these hack reports a mile away, but it scares me how often board members run with a story without thinking about it for themselves.
