Guys, it's Time to Talk About VD

Post#1 » by DoobieKeebler » Wed Nov 5, 2014 10:30 pm

Halfway through the 2014 season and

Pundits say Harbaugh has lost the team and can't work with Baalke...

Marcus Lattimore is retiring...

The sky is falling.....

But what about VD in 2015? Of the two contract holdouts during the off season, VD's was more ridiculous but slightly less destructive than Boone's. Now, halfway through the season, VD has 16 catches, 161 yards, 2 TDs, and is potentially on pace to have his worst season in 6 years. Despite this, I'm guessing VD and his agent are not going to give up on the dream of negotiating for/holding out for a better contract in the off season.

Think Baalke is going to hold firm and make VD play out his contract? Think VD would even do that? Might VD ask for a trade if he doesn't get what he wants?

Regardless, VD is not going to be a happy camper if he's a Niner in 2015 because I don't see him getting any sort of pay raise (Carrier has almost as many yards!), and he's only going to lose value if he's forced to hit the 2016 FA market as a 32 year old TE that relies on speed instead of sure-handed catching.

Heck, the Niners might not even WANT VD (lol. "want VD") if Baalke decides to extend Crabby & Iupati.

Just goes to show a changing in the team is just around the corner, thoroughly depressed that with all this talent it couldn't translate into a super bowl win. I say don't give in to his demands.

So true. Playoffs or no playoffs this offseason will be huge for baalke.

On VD I agree on letting him finish out his contract. Dude Won't ask for a trade.

Yea I am leaning toward letting him finish out his contract....I am still very hopeful for Vance McDonald. Too much potential as a pass catcher to not succeed eventually. The Browns Jordan Cameron didnt start producing until his 3rd season when he made the Pro Bowl last year.

Vernon Davis is a freak athlete...and that's about it. That's why his decline will be sharper than most when (if it hasn't happened yet) it hits. Once he can't out-run LBs and safeties it's a done deal for him.

As opposed to a guy like Jason Witten, who can keep it going deeper into his career b/c he's a more natural receiver despite always being a marginal athlete.

Exactly. His speed is his biggest weapon. He doesn't catch very well and never with his hands. So when he is covered he has less chance to go and get it. Nothing he does looks fluid and natural. Everything looks mechanical.

It seems like he has taken a significant step back hands wise in 2014.

I don't actually mean to bring him up every time, but Carrier has made some a couple nice catches where he has gotten absolutely crushed by defenders while still holding onto the ball. VD, on the other hand, is having trouble holding onto the ball even when wide open.

jason Witten has really dropped off this year. Don't know the if it is bec of him. I have him for Fantasy Football and his numbers are down this year. He isn't getting many catches.

Dallas isn't throwing as much this year with the season Murray is having, and Terrence Williams has emerged as a legitimate threat at WR.

That being said, last year he caught 73 balls, this year he's on pace for 60. It isn't a huge drop.

As for Davis, those that have been posting for awhile with me know I've never been a big fan of him. I respect his athleticism, but he's never seemed like a great football player, and even his athleticism is quite limited (great speed, but struggles laterally. . . ).

Have you guys looked a Duron Carter, Chris Carter's son. He originally played for ohio state, but he was a douche, so he left and made stops at two small schools and Bama. He plays in the Canadian football league. He was just shy of 1,000 yards last year, and he is over that this year. He's 23, 6'5" 205lbs I believe. He's a free agent for next year and can be signed by an NFL team. Worth looking into?
