Greg Monroe 2014-2015
The Bobcats have always had threads to track each of their players and I thought maybe that same idea could work on this board.
Greg Monroe has been our most underrated Piston. After Mo Cheeks was canned- Monroe put up 17 points/10 boards/2 assists to end the season. That wasn’t good enough for some Pistons fans, some claimed that he “was as good as he was going to get”, “not even as good at PF as Josh Smith” and “a lousy fit with Andre Drummond”.
Some thought that Monroe was only worth 10-12 million dollars a year and were offended when Monroe, who rightly believed that he was worth more than Detroit’s low ball 12-13.5 million dollar per year contract offer, took the QO.
Currently Monroe is averaging 17.5 points/12 boards/3 assists on 50% FG, 78% FT in 30 minutes per game with a 56% TS and a PER of 27. Monroe is top 10 in both scoring (6th) and rebounding (2nd) amongst PFs.
Unlike Cheeks who sought to minimize Monroe in favor of Smith/Jennings, SVG is going to Monroe in the post often where Greg excels and he’s responded well. Additionally, SVG has lauded Monroe’s defensive acumen although Monroe could still be better in that regard. Thus far Monroe has shown himself to be Detroit’s best player, and he’s still not even in his prime having recently turned 24.
Is Monroe as good as he can be? Or does he still have room to grow? Is he capable of playing PF in addition to C? Do people finally believe that SVG was telling the truth when he talked up the Monroe/Drummond combo so much this offseason? Is Monroe still only “worth” the 10-12 million that fans believed or the 13.5 that SVG offered? Will he command a max contract? And, if so, will Detroit be the team to offer that contract

Greg Monroe is easily worth $16-17 million........according to the value meter that is this board which has Draymond freaking Green at $12 million.

Re: Greg Monroe 2014-2015
Seeing as how some other players have gotten insane deals, Monroe is easily in the market range of 15+ mil.
I think he's worth it based on his production thus far, he's clearly our best player and most consistent. Yes, even better than Dre and Smith, it's not close.

Re: Greg Monroe 2014-2015
Can we offer him more then any other team? Cant we offer him a 5 year max because we are the only ones that can retain his bird rights?
I still think hes gone either way though. We suck and he wouldn't have gone through all this trouble for nothing.

Re: Greg Monroe 2014-2015
Obviously the change in market value means that Monroe is worth more than originally expected. I'm just glad we got Meeks on 6M now... based on this new information, you could argue he'd be worth 8-12M lol.
Monroe has played good so far, has looked quicker afoot, and not as lousy on defense (JMO). The 78% FT might be a bit too much to sustain for a year, but the base line of 17/12/3 is not out of the realm of possibility. Maybe a bit high in rebounding due to Andres foul problems thus far... but 10 is totally possible.
Even at 50% it just seems like against the Jazz the amount of blown basically layups around the hoop which were somewhat contested felt like they should go in anyway... and I want to know what the offense looks like when Drummond/Monroe/Butler/Meeks/Augustin play together. Monroe with the ball surrounded with 40% 3PT shooters should mean constant 1v1 action in the post, and if it doesnt, he should be able to make the pass to the open shooter. If they leave it 1v1 and Monroe is against a smaller power forward, then he should be able to score from the post. If he can't be that guy, then whatever, I don't care if he leaves. If he can be that guy, well then pay him. I think that he'd be a really nice 3rd best offensive player on a great team... how do you think we would be as a team if he was the 2nd best offensive player?

Yeah, I believe we still got the bird rights to throw the 5th year. So no one else can offer more money which could be good for us. Just depends if he is willing to take it from us or if he's so angry at the organization/team/market that it doesn't even matter.

No way, You guys got to remember Drummonds still just a baby that just had record breaking rookie and sophmore seasons. Hes already done things as a raw 20 year old that only Shaq has done. Now hes actually getting coached. And really hes still way ahead of the curve for a 3rd year big man.

Ed Davis may be a bargain in the offseason.. Not kidding either. Kid plays defense and we might not have to tear the whole thing down after Monroe leaves..

I would target Kanter if Monroe walks. I had no idea Kanter could shoot the way he can.

Hopefully SVG can convince Moose to come back. He's played great thus far. Hopefully he can maintain similar production throughout the season.

Re: Greg Monroe 2014-2015
He probably is our best player, but so far I think he's played more C than he has PF and I am not sure we have the luxury of that trend continuing.
He definitely still has room to grow and despite being our best option at PF, I still think there are question marks about a Dre/Moose pairing. He's shooting under 30% from outside 5ft and is 1-8 on jump shots. If he has to get within 5ft of the basket to be efficient, then Drummond is probably not the best front court partner for him. He has assisted Drummond on 1 basket and Drummond hasn't assisted him on any.
Regarding contract, I don't think we low balled him. Based on a projected salary cap of $66M (it could easily be higher), I think a max deal from us, next off-season, would look something like this:
Year 1: 16.5M
Year 2: 17.7M
Year 3: 19.1M
Year 4: 20.5M
Year 5: 22M
I can see situations where this kind of deal could make sense, but I'm not sure how realistic it is and there are a lot of variables in play between now and the off-season. I still think he's probably gone after this year and, given the uncertainty, it's going to be hard to turn down any good offers that come in for him this year.

Re: Greg Monroe 2014-2015
Yes, he is more or less as good as he's going to be. He might have a season in his career where he puts up 20/10 at some point, but talent and skill wise he is the player he's going to be. UNLESS, he adds a legit mid range jumper. But he hasn't really shown progress in that regard, so otherwise...he's the player he's going to be. He's by no means a bad athlete but not a great one either. Unlike guys who live off their athleticism and dominate because they are faster, stronger and more explosive and may develop more skill later on it, Moose plays well because he's skilled now.
With all that said, he's easily been the best player for us this season and I hope to see him in a piston uniform against next season, regardless of the cost.

I guess it depends on what you think they offered Monroe and what you think would have been a "low-ball" offer. I've been under the impression that the best offer was something close to the Josh Smith deal. Which I would consider to be a bit of a lowball offer.
That max deal you're projecting seems a little steep, but heck if that's what it takes to keep our own so be it.
