"Houston Rockets rookie Robert Covington, who has played on assignment with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, was today named the 2014 NBA Development League Rookie of the Year, as voted on by the league’s 17 head coaches. The award recognizes the first-year professional who most significantly contributed to his team’s success during the course of the season.

Covington (6-9, 215, Tennessee State) played in 42 of the Vipers 50 regular season games on assignment from the Rockets, 41 as a starter. He averaged a team-high 23.2 points, good for second-best in the NBA D-League, while shooting 44 percent from the field. He rounded out his stat line averaging a Vipers-best 9.2 rebounds and 2.4 steals, second-highest in the league. During the regular season, Covington led the team in scoring 21 times and was the Vipers leading rebounder in 13 contests. He scored in double figures in 41 of his 42 games in Rio Grande Valley, recording two 40-plus point games and four additional 30-plus point outings.

A 2014 NBA D-League All-Star, Covington scored an NBA D-League All-Star record 33 points, 22 of which came in the game’s final six minutes, en route to earning MVP honors in the game. He connected on 12 of his 23 shots, including four-of-eight three-pointers at NBA All-Star festivities in New Orleans.

“Robert has had an excellent rookie season on assignment with the Vipers,” said Chris Alpert, Vice President of Basketball Operations and Player Personnel for the NBA D-League. “He embraced the opportunity to develop all aspects of his game in the NBA D-League and proved that he is able to perform at a professional level. I congratulate him on such a successful start to his career and look forward to watching his progress with the Houston Rockets.”

6'9 forward who can shoot, has played exceptionally well in the D-League. Mention his accolades in the OP, also was the first overall pick in this past DL draft. I really love this signing.

Hinkie tried to sign him earlier as I recall, but they couldn't get together on contract terms at the time. He wanted a shorter deal and we were offering the four year Hinkie special with some guaranteed money. It will be interesting to see what kind if deal he signs. As much as JaKar Sampson sucks, Chris Johnson is worse. I would rather see him go first. At least JaKar has some upside in his athleticism from what I have seen, though he is clearly D-League material at this point.

Covington should be an interesting addition.

Fine with us acquiring any wings that can shoot, spacing is always welcome, especially if we are going to attempt to run MCW with Wroten at the guard spots.

Remember how James Nunally was supposed to be our shooter we lacked? Or hell remember how Chris Johnson was a sneaky pick up?

Houston Rocket fans didn't seem too worried about losing him when he was released. From their discussion boards seems he looked over-matched in the NBA, but looks like an All-star in the NBDL.

Actually if you ask me which Center I want for my perfect championship caliber team, I will chose Asik hands down

Most DLeague allstars will. There haven't been many major success stories of DLeague superstars turning into good NBA players after being called up. Sure a lot of dudes have had stints there but that generally happens at the training camp/ summer league level.

The DLeague is such a dissapointment. They need to stop half assing it and make it similar to baseball. Every team gets one, expand the draft and whatnot and make it an actual development league for the squads. As is it is just a **** league where guys don't actually develop and seem to just be out to get numbers to get a 10 day.

Covington seems cool and like any Sixer player I wish he does amazing things but dude took 9 3s, made 2, doesn't seem quick enough to guard 3s, not swole enough to guard 4s, and reminds me of former Sixer Craig Brackens.

If Hinkie is going to dig through the trash I'd rather it be more Wroten like finds instead..guys wasting away on NBA roster if only because in the back of mind with any of these DLeague signees is "if he was any good he'd be on a NBA roster instead.." which isn't fair but from the gazillion and five dudes we have taken looks at, I haven't exactly been proven wrong yet. Hollis and Sims are kinda it...and Hollis more or less stayed with us all summer and felt like a glorified 2nd round, Sims was on the Cavs. James Nunally, DJO, Vanardo, Dedmon,Orton, Chris Johnson and probably this dude.....are just mehh

Well, he played only 34 minutes for them last season, obviously they wouldn't seem too worried about losing him because they shouldn't be worried about losing him... He was efficient in the few games he played for them though and performed well in the D League.
