Wiggins relishes Wade's words of wisdom

Post#1 » by overland » Sun Nov 9, 2014 5:22 pm

MIAMI -- Among the baskets Dwyane Wade scored against the defense of Andrew Wiggins in the final four minutes Saturday were a 19-foot baseline jumper that took some of the tension out of a surprisingly close finish, and a clean split of the pick-and-roll that ended in a two-handed dunk that sealed Miami’s 102-92 win.

The 2014 No. 1 draft pick could’ve learned plenty just watching Wade close out the young Timberwolves, finishing with 25 points, eight assists and two steals.

But the greatest takeaway for Wiggins came when Wade approached the rookie after the game and offered a few words of encouragement (no, they didn’t spend a time badmouthing LeBron James for abandoning each of them).

“He asked me if I wanted to be great,” Wiggins said of his postgame exchange with Wade. “I said yes. He said I’ve got all the tools to be great, just keep working.”

Wiggins had his second double-figure scoring effort (10) but was 3-of-9 with one rebound and two assists. It was consistent with his coach Flip Saunders’ description of Wiggins pregame, when he said the rookie can be “spectacular” at times but too often has “wasted minutes.”

It didn’t help that Wiggins, 19, wasn’t even the youngest starter on his team Saturday. Zach LaVine, younger than Wiggins by 15 days, started in place of Ricky Rubio, who suffered a severe sprain to his left ankle. Saudners said he started LaVine ahead of Mo Williams because LaVine projects as an important piece to the franchise’s future.

As is Wiggins, of course. And those few seconds he spent with Wade after the final whistle were hardly a waste.

“Those words at the end of the game just motivate me,” Wiggins said. Already I’m thinking about what he said, and it’s going to carry through for a long time now.

“He’s one of the people I watched growing up, one of the people I idolized. That guy right there is great.”

Its only been a few games, but what people have to take notice is Wiggins is already relied on defending the best perimeter player. Cavs IMO made a huge mistake trading Wiggins. He will be better than Love sooner than you think. He is already better defender than anyone on the cavs outside James

Him to Toronto would be win-win for everyone, including himself. I don't think we'd get a shot at him lol.

I know. He'd be a great fit for sure. He got the intangibles to be a Heat type player.

Wiggins likes Wade, eh? Better believe Riley is taking notes. Wiggins will be signed in Wade's final season. Dwyane will mentor the budding superstar and, teamed with Andre Drummond and Brandon Knight, will show him how to be a champion the same way Duncan is doing for Leonard now.

And then I woke up.

Amazing gesture by Wade! I for one hope Wiggins flourishes as well, especially how he got dealt from the Cavs.

Im done with athletic SF's that were the #1 pick.

If you want to fantasies about players we won't get, please focus on a stud PG or Center.

Dream of Drummond.

Drummond is no good without an elite passing point guard. He is the center version of Kenyon Martin. Im still baffled why we didnt draft him over Chalmers.

Aside from the fact that I have the right to "fantasize" about whoever I want the same way you've had a hard-on for Justin Hamilton the last six months, didn't I actually name-drop Drummond and Knight (projected progress) in that post?

Lol you're thinking of DeAndre, Drummond's potential is basically a richman's Deandre.

I'm glad you caught on to what he was saying. I was confused.

Just curious, but can anyone find the game where Kevin Garnett was giving words of wisdom to Wade in his rookie season?

Crazy how it all comes around. KG motivates Wade. Wade motivates Wiggins. Love the NBA. :)

Wiggins doesn't strike me as that much motivated, he always seems like he's chilling. And outside of his athleticism i don't know one thing that he does particularly well, even his defense, meh. He's a long work in progress

He's a nice guy version of Gerald Green. I hope he can take his game to another level. As it stands, I'm not convinced.
