Brian McIntyre:

With Carson Palmer, Brandon Mebane & Patrick Willis on IR, NFC West teams have $97.9M in 2014 cap dollars on IR. ($99.4M in 2014 cash)

I was initially thinking why didn't he get this surgery done during the offseason? But this is likely the type of injury that's a coin toss between working itself out over time instead vs. going under the knife. That doesn't give me a ton of confidence that a surgery will get him back to where he used to be. At least it should clear up the pain and maintain his existing level. I wonder if this injury also factored into the Borland pick for long term (Willis) in addition to short term (Bowman). We could have gone a lot of different directions with that pick, but it's saving us big time right now.

And yet with the exception of the Broncos game the defense hasn't really been the main culprit in the losses.

Sometimes drs are scared to opt for surgery because, at least as I've been told for an issue of mine, that the surgeon is concerned about causing as much (or possibly more) harm than good. I imagine Willis opted to try and let it heal by itself first.

And I bet Willis would have tried to hold off on the surgery til the off season if it weren't for the fact that Borland is playing lights out (also the team is under achieving).

Return to San Francisco 49ers
