Re: 2014-2015 NBA MVP Discussion
People are really desperate for Bosh to be considered a top tier player now that LBJ is gone. He's fantastic and he's an all star, but the idea him getting anything but an honorable mention for NBA MVP at the end of the year is downright laughable. Hes not that player.

Would 50 wins for pelicans be enough for Davis to get it? I think it would be fair to assume that stats wise only James has a chance to match him at the end of the season.

Its early, but John Wall has to be in this conversation. If the Wizards win something crazy like 60+, it would be an easy decision.

Agreed, but he's still the best and most important player in the Heat.

Davis won't get it if he doesn't carry the Pelicans to HC advantage.
Right now I prefer Lebron and Harden.

Would Harden get it or Dwight? They are both pretty key cogs to Houston's success and I could see Dwight putting up better overall stats.
In some ways they could take votes from each other.

Dwight should get it. Harden is shooting terrible.

If 50 wings equals a top 3 seed in the West.Which it doesn't.

Why should MVP require top 3 seed or something like that? IMHO getting a non-playoff team to playoffs is bigger (in terms of "regular season relevance") than getting an obvious playoff- team to a slightly better seed than expected.

Because thats standard the MVP award has. Always been like that. Always will be.

which is a stupid criteria. Best player that year gets stuck playing without a single All Star = no top 3 seed but the guy that plays with two other All Star to a top 3 seed gets it.

If he continues being historically good, absolutely. The only guy I can see putting up video game stats to match him is LeBron, but if the Cavs 'only' win 52 or 53 games it'll really hurt his MVP chances the same way the Heat's disappointing regular season in 2010-11 opened the door for Rose. Speaking of, Rose will be right in the thick of it if he puts up something similar to his MVP numbers like 23/8/4 and the Bulls win the East. He'll have the narrative aspect of the award squarely in his favor yet again, like it or not.
Personally I'm rooting for Davis.

Re: 2014-2015 NBA MVP Discussion
We always talk about how history says you need a lot of wins to get the MVP and it makes sense but I feel like the world is getting smarter with statistics and determining how good players actually are and the impact they can have. We kinda saw this in baseball as great players on mediocre teams got rewarded with awards more and more. Wins for pitchers stopped mattering, etc.
The past couple years we haven't really had to debate it because the two best guys in the league (Durant and LeBron played on the best teams) but if AD keeps playing like the best guy in the league and only wins say 48 games and gets the 7 or 8 seed in the West I wouldn't be shocked if he still won the award. You would still have the old dinosaurs voting based on wins but I am not really sure that even the precedent of 5 years ago applies to today.

I tend to agree with you the criteria needs to change with the times.

When you don't have dominant teams, you don't get dominant MVP candidates (usually).

I mean, statistically Anthony Davis has this by a mile so far. But will the Pelicans be good enough for him to win it, I dunno. Past him you have to look at Dirk, Harden, Dwight, Curry, Bosh and Wade. And of course LeBron figures to get in the race at some point/

Not stupid criteria, more like narrow lens. At season's end you look at the best 4 teams in each conference(the home court advantage contenders) and decide by numbers, possibly by win share % which player had most impact on his team's reg. season performance. Durant was obviously better than LeBron last year.
I think this season only way for Durant is to come back from injury and go on a vendetta and Thunder finish top 3 in the West. It would be hard to vote against that. The only way LeBron wins MVP again is if Cavs finish top 2 in the East. This year's MVP race is more wide open than past year's, and if Rose plays a D-Wade partial season you're looking at an MVP we haven't seen yet. This should be the year of the Guards or Centers. If it's PG I'm going with Curry, if C I'm predicting Marc Gasol.

To be frank, the above is irrelevant.
Look at the criteria that has gone on in years past.
Getting 50 wins is not enough. If it was, Dwight Howard would have been MVP in 2010-11.
Davis is going to put up MVP type numbers, but if he doesn't have 55+ wins and a top seed, he is not winning MVP.
As to the race so far, unfortunately, i have Harden on top.
Can't stand him and the way he plays the game, but the Rockets are 8-1 and his basic numbers are absurd. If he can fix his shooting, he can go up another level.
Curry is not far behind him.
With Cleveland struggling and Durant all but out of the race, the MVP race is open.

Re: 2014-2015 NBA MVP Discussion
Mvp race often looks open at beginning of the season. Durant going down helps but come the mid point of the season there will only be a few guys with a clear case.
