D12 on Stan..

Post#1 » by Han Solo » Thu Nov 13, 2014 3:37 am

Dwight on asking Magic management to make a coaching change after Orlando’s first-round exit in the 2011 playoffs:

“We shouldn’t be losing like this. I wanted to win. And I went to management and I said: ‘Guys, I’m a player. I just want to give my two cents. I think that our coach has lost his touch with the team. Great coach, but I think he’s lost his touch, I think he’s lost his voice. And I think it’s time that you guys get a new voice.’ I said, ‘I love him as a coach, but I think we need a new voice.’ … Six weeks [later], they finally respond [and say], ‘We’re gonna keep Stan.’ So I’m like: ‘OK. That lets me know how you guys feel about your leader expressing how to make the team better.’ “

What point is Howard trying to make? Under Stan he had success, without him he hasn’t accomplished anything.

He was never "the leader" of that Magic team. SVG led the team. On the floor, decisions were entrusted to Jameer Nelson and Turkglo. Howard was the freshly minted star of the team, but leader? Nah. No way. Howard went into a constant state of decline after that Finals run where he was a no show.

"Great coach" "I love him as a coach"
*thinks a new coach is a good decision*

...Like the sport is really filled with great coaches... There are like 5-7 guys in the league right now that I'd consider great. If you have one, like SVG, I don't know why you would get rid of him.

Howard and SVG have repaired their relationship since Orlando. Howard was obviously in the wrong, he thought that he was better than he was but he's never looked as good as when he played under SVG.

Eh, its not exactly news that Dwight wanted him out.

And given my opinion on Dwight that's practically an endorsement.

I love that Otis Smith stood by Stan Van, and I'm happy that Stan took care of Otis - assuming Otis really wanted to coach like has been said after he took the D-League job. Loyalty in sports is very rare.

does anyone remember why SVG got fired by/resigned from the heat? he helped turn that team around and coached the first 21 games of the 2006 season (they went 11-10) before pat riley took coaching responsibilities from him after that and obviously they won the championship that year.

It was Stan's first head coaching job with Shaq that immediately started rubbing each other the wrong way. I think Stan learned from that experience because he did last in Orlando for a long time. Stan used to yell alot more than he does now.

This says a lot more of Dwight than it does about SVG. Dwight completely lied about it when this happened.
