I feel this is the year to trade Rondo
If it's going to hard to build around Rondo, I feel we should trade him before he walks. Rondo is going to want top dollars, and IMO he isn't worth the money for this team.
Before people go crazy about this, just remember when we won and title and also made it back to the Finals. Rondo was our 4th best player behind Pierce, KG, and Ray. I feel we won't win much with Rondo as our best player or even as our second best player. Rondo will help a team win when he is the team's third or fourth best player.
If Ainge could pull off a two for one type deal for Rondo, that's fair value, he needs to do it. To add talent, sometimes you have to give up talent. I just feel it's a mistake to build around Rajon, and it might be time to trade him. Rondo can help a contending team and we are far from contending at this point. A Rondo trade might be best for both Rajon and the Celtics to get the rebuilding going at a faster pace.

I was with you a few months ago, but I've kinda come around there. At this point, I just feel like he' not going to get any real value for us.
I like him on a team with actual talent, and think that even if we are not able to land some this offseason, there's not much risk in letting it play out.

Follow the dollars, NBA is a business.
BBP (http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boston_B ... l_Partners) likes the seats filled, rondo fills seats. They're going to try to keep him, if they can't, and have to trade, it's not because they want to, its because they have to.

Celtics lack quality of players, not quantity of players, especially considering all the upcoming picks. Rondo plus for someone better than Rondo, sure, but to trade him to get a couple of players inferior to him is to me is taking the team towards the bottom, not the top. Rondo plus, or Green plus, or Bass plus plus for upgrades is the only thing I'm interested in.

I feel Rondo's gonna be a Celtic for life, but that's just me ('cos you never know with Trader Dan).

The key is to get fair value back or close to fair value. Even if it's a sign and trade to move up in the up coming draft, Ainge has to consider it. I will leave that up to Danny, hoping he can get players to help the team win sooner than later. This is a franchise that has won only one title in the last 27 years. So Ainge needs to do anything he can to get fair value rather than pay Rondo big money to keep him or let me walk for nothing.
Again, I don't feel that Rondo is worth top dollars because he is best as a third or 4th player on a contending team. And of you pay him big bucks, than doesn't leave much to get two all star type players, which is something we need.

The return would have to be really appetizing, which is tough to see materializing when you start to break down who needs a guard and the assets they are lacking.

I feel like Ainge is going to keep Rondo here for his career just to troll the media.

Re: I feel this is the year to trade Rondo
Championship teams need multiple stars and Rondo has proven that he can be one of those stars. If there was real value out there then I would not be against a trade but I just do not see it. Due to his FA he can pretty much veto any deal he does not like and the teams that need a PG are already a select few.
I think Ainge's preference is to continue to build trade value in the other assets the Celtics have and look to combine those with picks to pair someone with Rondo.
Also the idea is not to build around Rondo. It is to build with Rondo.

Re: I feel this is the year to trade Rondo
We're not going to get much in return for him at the deadline considering his contract status and what his contract demands are likely to be. He's more valuable to us than he is anywhere else. And he knows it. And Danny knows it. But if we're not going to max him out (and I agree with not doing that), all that leaves is for us to find common ground to re-sign him or more likely, watch him walk out the door after the season ends. I don't see this team making the playoffs and I don't see many impact guys wanting to come here unless you can convince Rondo's friends to come here(read: Gay, Perk, Josh Smith). Danny neds to make a deal during the season not after it. After it, it'll be too late. Rondo will take his free agent tour and we will be left holding the bag. It's very feasible that we take another step backwards next season before we can truly move forward again.
and that's "MR. Irrelevant" to you!!

Rondo was the 4th best player on the 2010 team
Honestly this has been discussed soooooo many times why do we need to beat this dead horse again? Neither side is going to change their opinions nothing left to do but see how it plays out.

Thank you. I'm surprised it took to the 10th response for someone to call this out. Rondo was arguably the second best player on that team. He pretty much single handily beat Cleveland.

Rondo was routinely taken out in the finals for Eddie Freaking House and the team went off because of it. He forced players to play 1 vs 2 on offense.
Saying he was the fourth best player is generous. One could easiely say in 2008 he was behind Perkins and Posey let alone the big 3. Even if Ray Allen is the invisible man who shows up once every 5 games.
The time to trade Rondo, was the same time we traded Pierce and KG.
Now he's in a contract year and is old. So we've eliminated rebuilding teams, and teams now will have to be concerned he won't resign.

spot on.
not interested in trading rondo and getting more draft picks or adding to our collection of also-ran players. if we can dump rondo and get someone better, sure i'm all for it. but ideally we just trade our stockpile of assets and get someone to play alongside rondo.

I think this is exaggerated. Rondo isn't the kind of player that convinces me whether or not I wanna buy a ticket or not

We aren't getting close to his value if we trade him now. That is how you make yourself a mediocre franchise.

Re: I feel this is the year to trade Rondo
With the cap increasing I'm not so down on extending Rondo anymore. We can give him the max this off-season and it won't be an albatross, so there's no harm in holding onto him for this year and then extending him (unless your hell-bent on an all-out tank). Therefore, if were going to trade him it'll be better to do so after we extend him.
Ceteris Paribus I'm against having a star/max contract at PG, just because its generally a pretty easy position to fill and the ratio of production variance to salary variance is small relative to positions where talent is thin. However, Rondo is our only legit star. Trading him is going to make it impossible to attract top free agents (with his contract situation he won't fetch us a star in return). I would bet that there are a number of bigs in the league that would love to play with Rajon and we are going to have enough cap space to bring in a few near-max players. If we can be an exciting team in the east, scrap into the playoffs, and threaten to win a few playoff games then we'll be a great free agent destination.
So we play this year out, extend him at the max or close to it, and attempt to sell some other free agents on joining him. If that doesn't work plan B could be trading him for a young scorer or big, opening up minutes for Smart, and going full rebuild.

You do realize that he was talking about 2010? Not Rondo's second season in 2008?
Also, Rondo is old? Huh? He is 28 going on 29. That's "old" to you? Not to be offensive or anything, but what the hell happened to you with this post?

Read before responding. We're talking about the 2010 Boston Celtics. He was arguably the second best player on that team, and yes, single handily won the Cavs series. Go back and watch those games vs. the Cavs. He had 2-3 EPIC games, and was the best player on the floor.
It's insane if you're denying this.
