Could trading Kobe make us a better team?

Post#1 » by Alienware » Mon Nov 17, 2014 1:30 pm

Another Kobe thread, I know it won't happen, but just throwing ideas out there. Maybe I'm too trustworthy in our supporting crew, but am I the only one that believes that we could actually be a better team without Kobe?

More balanced offense, that would lead to more effort on defense, in a situation similar to what happened to the Raptors last year when they improved after trading Gay.

Kobe would be able to chase the title elsewhere, and we could develop our younger guys, trying to see which one is deserving, while also being a better team overall (not that much better though, still top 5 lottery worthy).

I think trading Kobe could make us better for the distant future, but if you're trading him hoping to turn this team into a contender, you're a fool.

Look at my final line. I'm not turning this team into contender, just into a slightly less horrific team.

No I don't think so. There's just not alot of talent here and deep down we all know that. It's just the fan in us that keeps hope alive that they will turn things around. We get blown out if Kobe shoots 14 times or 40 and that's because there is not alot of talent here. I love scott and I'm willing to ride with him the rest of the year but honestly he's showing me nothing.

Sure give us Kyle Lowry and Demar Derozan and we'll probably be able to turn this around, with this current squad...nah

Which wouldn't be worth it... What would be the point.

You're trading the only half way decent player on the team for 2 or maybe 3 lesser players? No one is going to give you a star... Your best bet is to try to trade Kobe to a contender interested in winning now more than they are about draft picks, and see what you can get...

All that, and you'd be leaving money on the table in the form of marketing dollars.

It'd be a bad move at this point to say the least.

Plus, it'd have to be a pretty special team for Kobe to waive his no-trade clause... I'd think the best option would be to Chicago for Rose... Kobe and Sacre for Rose and Gibson...
Kobe gets to break MJ's record in his house, Chicago saves money and probably wins more games, we get Taj Gibson, and the only active player in the league with less in the tank than Steve Nash.

Not terribly exciting.

My point was that we could get better just by taking him out without having anyone replacing him, so a trade for picks and or tpe and or injured guys. We wouldn't hurt the tank that much, and at least we wouldn't have an historically awful season.

we'd turn into a completely unwatchable team

You have to do 2 things when you trade Kobe:

1) Convince him to waive is no-trade clause
2) After that, get a decent return

Kobe has you over a barrel. If you can convince him to waive his no trade clause, there are going to be maybe 2 teams he wants to go to. So you'll have next to no leverage. If you convince that team to give up too much, Kobe just decides to stay.

Kobe pretty much has to demand to be traded just about anywhere, for this to be even a half-way painless deal for the Lakers... Which is just not going to happen.

But that's exactly my point I don't want the other team to give up much in the short term. I don't think he really cares if the team he's going to gives up one or two picks, as long as he's able to contend in the two years he's got left in this league.

So why did you argue with my point to begin with?

Because I'm arguing that it could also work in the immediate future.

It won't make us better once the trade happens. However, it allows us to make a full rebuild a year earlier than scheduled which is something that should be considered moving forward.

Of course it would, but it's not going to happen. Loyalty has killed this organization. Standing by Nash, and letting Pau and Dwight walk has put us in a deep hole. There's no easy fix here and we're gonna suck for a while. Starting to think we need someone a little more ruthless calling the shots.

Not loyalty..tbey trying to squeeze every dollar they can get out of kobe for now. He still sells tickets/merchandise. He still is a big topic in the nba.

I believe it's a moot point. Kobe has decided that getting traded would soil his legacy worse than staying on a deadman's ship.

The only way you could say definitively at this point that "trading Kobe would make the Lakers better" is if you actually thought trading Kobe would be addition by subtraction. Because at this point, Kobe's value is extremely hard to judge, even before the Trade Clause.
With the trade Clause, he may not even have any value.
