Giving players free agent dollars without destroying the farm system?

I approve.

Edit: that's in reference to Lester, not Miller. The Jays should not be overpaying relievers.

I have to expect the Jays to sign a big name pitcher. Having Martin on board can be persuasive. And we've already lost the first round draft pick, so the down side is less.

I wonder if the plan is to try and replace a Dickey/Thole or Buerhle with a Lester or Shields. It's something I was advocating since last off-season. Obviously it's easier said then done, but it would make the marginal AAV cost of a legitimate ace to be somewhere in the $7-10M range, which we could stomach.

A rotation of young studs lead by a legitimate ace like Lester and managed by Martin would be absolutely incredible.
Nick Nurse recounting his first meeting with Kawhi:
“We could have gone forever. (Raptors management) kept knocking on the door and I was like, ‘A couple more minutes.’ Because we were really into it."

Blue Jays are potentially making a long-term offer to sign SP Jon Lester. Some details from @bradfo on his timeline.

Holy ****. I thought the interest in lester may have been swayed...but damn. The blue jays are really going for it if true.

Part of me still feels like lester not gonna come here. He seems like a player who is loyal and wouldnt sign with another Al east team after spending his whole life with the redsox. I think its still between the redsox/cubs for lester.

But damn if we do get lester doe.....

If the Jays were to get Lester - still a longshot IMO - it would really set up a deal for Dickey or Buerhle and likely Happ. Even if we eat some salary on one of the first two, it would help offset some of the first year cost for Lester.

Russell Martin's presence would surely be a draw/ tip the scales??

Surely Lester is using the Jays and Cubs to get the Sox to match, right? I can't see why they wouldn't just easily match a deal for him and bring him back. It's not like they don't have the need for starting pitching and a ton of money.

Maybe not for Lester specifically, but knowing the Jays are spending money and going for it may entice some players.

Now that I think of it, its do-able.

Lets say we ate 8 million of Buehrles deal, we save 11 million, and that would give us around 25 million, assuming we had 30 million to spend before the Martin deal.

This appears to be the same news as earlier. Don't see any other news involving potential term and dollars

Anthopolous figures Martin impacts about half his roster, loves the leadership, better contact rates. "What we do now will probably be...trades. We'll check in on Lester, but we won't go to six years, and we know we won't be in."
