They just traded an unproven running back for a first round pick and for the most part RB's in the 1st round are a thing of the past. The only way this bites them is if he becomes the next Peterson type back. He has the physical specs to be a great back and that is why Indy is taking a risk. I have no problem with Indy taking a risk but the odds are the first round pick will have more value than Richardson.
thats pretty hard to ignore and should factor into the discussion, no?
This is a commonly flawed way of thinking. The assets used to acquire Richardson are a sunk cost. They no longer matter. The only thing that Cleveland needed to decide before this trade was 'Is Trent Richardson worth a first rounder'. I think considering what hes shown in the NFL up to this point, the answer is clearly 'no, hes not worth a first rounder'. The Browns managed to get one for him. I think Richardson has been one of the problems with the offense the last year, not part of the solution. Hes been slow and unable to create anything. He can't block, which makes him taken out of lots of passing plays, even though receiving skills are probaby his main draw at this point. His vision and the way he dances in the backfield is terribad.
If you want to relook at the Browns taking Richardson third overall - yeah that was a terrible terrible terrible decision. He hasnt looked like more than a third round talent. Hes like the 7th best player on the Browns terrible offense.
