2014 Offseason Thread

Post#1 » by GS Warriors 1 » Mon Nov 3, 2014 10:42 pm

Thread for free agency, trades, rumors, etc. from the Giants and around the league. If there is a big signing or trade involving the Giants, we can make a new thread about it.

Giants free agents (2014 salary in parenthesis):

3B Pablo Sandoval ($8.25M)
P Sergio Romo ($6.3M)
LF/1B Mike Morse ($6M)
P Ryan Vogelsong ($5M)
P Jake Peavy ($16.2M)

Giants extend qualifying offer of $15.3M to Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval has until November 10th to accept this offer, which would be for one year. None of the other 4 FA's got an offer, which was expected.

Pretty much everyone on your list might be gone. The Yankess, Red Soxs, or even the Dodgers could make a play for Pablo. Once again the Dodgers who had major problems with their relievers might make a run at Romo. Power hitting teams like the mariners will give Morse a long look. With so many teams over paying for starting pitching, Vogey and Peavy maybe history.

Possible replacements could be found in either their minors leagues or free agency. Starting pitchers Brett Anderson and Brandon Morrow are now free agents. Anderson found great success when he was on Oakland and Morrow is a former Cal Bear, both could pitch in spacious ATT park. Would love to see Duvall and Duffy make a run at third base and maybe trade for one. Pagain will be back so that could move Blance to left. But there will be still a power void. Alex Rios could be in the mix as the left fielder. The international prospects maybe out of the Giants price range.

Pablo is goiing to get a lot of money. We have no one to replace him at third and I don't have to pay him, so I think they should give him whatever he wants, within reason.

Sandoval currently meeting with Boston. Earlier reports today have said that the Giants and Red Sox are planning to offer him a 5-year deal worth between $80-90M.

He's only 28. 5 years at that price seems reasonable to me.

My sources tell me that Sandovel is receiving a 6 year deal with the Red Sox at an AAV of 18 Mil. The Red Sox are comfortable with giving him the additional years as they feel he can switch to DH once Ortiz retires. Also do not mind paying a DH max dollars after witnessing Victor Martinez contract with the Tigers, consider it the going rate.

Red Sox also in talks with top 3 pitchers, however will not go above five years on Lester. Cubs, Red Sox, Jays, and Dodgers to a lessor extent are in on Lester. Winning is important to Lestor however would like long-term security as well as a no-trade clause. Red Sox, and Jays appear unwilling to give no trade clause.

I've been reading that the Padres offered Pablo the most money.

Pablo,

Please sign with San Diego. You will love it there.

Stanford

Honestly, I'm cool with however this goes. If they decide that he's not worth 20 million a year, I would agree with them. If they decide that the replacement options are poor enough to overpay, I would agree with that as well. years would put him at age 32 at the end of his deal, and there's no reason to believe he's fall off in what should be his prime. Hell, he could get better.

Looking like he's signing with the Sox. Tough to lose Pablo, but at the same time, you've got to take off the rose colored glasses and think about paying 20 mil a year for a guy hitting .270 with 15 bombs.

I'd start to think long and hard about shifting our efforts towards a guy like Yasmani Tomas. If you can secure him at closer to 10MM per season, then that is tempting. I'd also start to think about moving Buster to 3B. He's got to make a position change at some point to maintain his offense, and he's too talented to simply plop down at 1B. IF they can somehow make a splash and get both Tomas and Lester, I'd feel real good about this off-season.

2015 Line-up

CF Pagan
2B Panik
RF Pence
3B Posey
1B Belt
LF Tomas
C Susac/Sanchez
SS Crawford

2015 Rotation

Bumgarner
Cain
Lester
Hudson
Lincecum/Petit

That would lock-up the top 3 spots in the rotation for a while, and we've got the arms in the farm to replace Hudson/Lincecum/Petit when that time comes.

Sad to see Panda go, but somehow I still don't feel this is the worst thing ever for the Giants. We'll find ways to win and replace players as always.

Larry Baer confirmed interest in Tomas on knbr this morning. Moncada seems more intriguing to me.

Tim Flannery, the old soul who can sing a perfect three-part harmony one night then chase a baserunner from third to home the next, is calling it a career.

The left side of the diamond is going to seem very unfamiliar next year.

Now who will send Buster directly into an out at home? I kid. Peace and love, flan.

The idea of having two 30 year old pitchers locked up to lengthy contracts is a little frightening, but it would certainly give us a good shot with the rotation next year.

But that can't be it. They need to be willing to go and get a bat to replace Pablo. Even with Pagan coming back, that offense is going to stink if we don't get help.
