Re: Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year
Call me crazy but after watching the first game against Houston where he had 6 steals, I think that Brown should experiment with having Noel guard long skinny 3's on the perimeter like Durant, Prince, Anthony Randolph, etc. instead of having him guard players that outweigh him by a good 30-40 lbs. in the paint at least until he bulks up if ever.
Obviously this would take away his shot-blocking ability somewhat but he has the length and lateral quickness to be a disruptive force on the perimeter.
I'm not saying that it would work, but I think it's at least worthy of consideration especially this season since we pretty much have nothing to lose except a lot of games.
As far as his offensive game goes, I'm not expecting too much from him on that end, but if he could find a way to improve his free throw percentage and knock down the occasional 10-12 foot jumper, I'd be happy with that.

My cod you people have gone off the deep end. This guy is going to be something special on the defensive end. Finding guys that want to stuff the stats sheets with points is common place in the NBA. Finding a guy who is a defensive specialist. Who can guard or will be able to guard multiple positions is rare. Finding a guy that won't take away shots from other people who won't have to have plays run for him but will get his is a gift.
10 games into his rookie season and the negativity is thick and alarming. He will probably end up being Dennis Rodman, with a more polished offensive game with less drama. Rodman was the anchor to a lot of championship teams and his contributions could not be measured by points alone.
Noel will alter shots and grab rebounds and make a significant contribution for years to come. Looking at the Spurs game last night. I counted at least 3 times where he made the opposing player alter their shots and miss. Wait until he actually learns how to play the NBA game.

We spent one whole season trying to teach Noel how to shoot with one hand, what NBA player comes out of college and can't shoot.?
It seems that Harris and his partners might be concerned more about making money than building a franchise team.
His background is buying low and selling high not neccesarily devloping a good product. This is done sucessfully in the stock market but not in Basketball.
Some of the most sucessfull owners put there heart and soul in deveoping a great team, it does not appear that is happening here. Sadly
Hahaaahahaha just stop.

I never said anything about his defense. His defense is good. I'm strictly talking offense. I think Noel will be good. I'm just telling people to not expect him to give much on offense. He's just not type of player.

“Nerlens is going to take some time,” Brown told reporters Monday night in San Antonio. “I think our city has to understand that. He's young and he hasn't played. I'm going to help him get to that next level.”
“I've got to find ways to help him and build his confidence and put him where he belongs,” Brown said. “I think, at times, he feels the weight of the world and he has to deliver. And that's just unfair and untrue. He hasn't played for so long (that) his path and his progress is going to be very deliberate. I think it's going to be slow.”

You are right and when you wrote he was not good. I took that as an overall statement of his entire game.
Even the people that don't think he is good are entitled to their opinion. It makes the board interesting.

If you noticed during the game he was pouting and sulking on the bench with a towel over his head, he knows he's not playing well and it's bothering him. Hopefully he's not letting the pressure get to him.

I'm not ready to give up on Nerlens, and dub him as 'terrible'.
18 months of not playing competitively cannot be undone in a 3 week span. Not to mention his last game was on the college level. We've seen rookies struggle out of college before, but factor in his looooooonnnggg break from the game and I believe that gives enough reason to give the guy some slack.

Nerlens Noel's offensive game makes Theo Ratliff's game look like that of a polished scorer.

These are the types of statements that bug me. Was Theo even in the NBA at Noel's age?
10 games into a rookie season of a guy who missed the last year due to injury, and was raw to begin with, people are making statements about him as if he isn't living up to expectations.
Are any of you guys parents? Parents understand what kids are capable of and how they develop. A rookie basketball player is sort of like a rookie student like a kindergartner. Are you going to destroy a kids confidence when he can't read 10 days into his first year of school?
Give Noel a break. He is trying hard and is on maybe the least talented team in NBA history.
There is no realistic expectation of him that he isn't living up to right now. He needs to be coached and gain experience, and strength. Get back to me in 2 years to decide if he is disappointing or not.

ankle420breaker wrote:I don't think anyone expected Noel to be anything more than a garbage man offensively, but his inability to hold onto the ball is definitely alarming. Un-teaching bad hands is no easy task. Its also strange, as I don't recall this being as much of an issue at Kentucky, or maybe I just didn't notice.
His free throw shooting has underwhelmed early on too, which is a bit of a disappointment since that's been advertised as an area of his game that he put a lot of work into improving. Still early, but he looks far from dialed in there.
He'll probably abandon his back to the basket game entirely once we have more talent on board, as well he should. He's a guy that will get his points finishing above the rim, off put-backs, dump-offs, drives, and the occasional 12 footer.
Sadly, until he starts accumulating some mass he's going to be limited. He just can't be an effective rebounder with such a frail frame and its keeping him from reaching his full potential defensively at this level.
Good thing it's his rookie season.

The anxiety of lacking job security on a tanking team could have detrimental affect on our young players like Noel and MCW. Especially when the top 3 draft prospects are big man and a point guard. I know I will be very disappointed if we put two years into these players with marketing and developing them just to trade them away for what might be a little better prospect. The whole collect assets notion instead of building a team and addressing weaknesses is starting to rub me the wrong way! Like drafting another center or point guard when we don't really need it. Especially playing d leaguers with no future in the league over our high potential young players.

He goes for 17 and 12 and crickets in here.
He misses a lob that nobody, including an in prime MJ couldn't have caught, and people can't wait to post about his awful hands and rush to the game thread to do so.
Ugh.

Think the dissapointment is kind of dominating right now. People including myself I think are now realising that this might actually be the worst team of all time. The offense is just so ugly.
I'm really happy he had a good game offensively and on the boards. His development is very important and one of the only fun things this season.
He also hasn't gotten severly injured yet, so there's that.

39 minutes with zero fouls is also impressive.

I thought he has shown very good basketball IQ. He reads defense and knows what are good opportunities and what are not. But sometimes being too smart can lead to lack of aggression. But lately, I've noticed that he's found a common ground and adjusted nicely.

I could care less if this is the worst team of all time. Makes no difference to me. I watch to see the development of our young guys and when we win some games that'll be great. Again, we all knew we would be really, really bad this year. We lost 26 or 27 games in a row last year. Why the surprise? 10 wins. 15 wins. 20 wins. Will it matter when we are hopefully good in a few years? Nope.
And, like I said, a bad play or performance people have no problem posting almost immediately. Something decent? Why bother posting?

Re: Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year
Nerlens Noel really is one of the most unique players to come along in quite some time. I tried to make the Larry Sanders comparison and in a lot of ways they are similar, but Nerlens played himself out of that mold by being such a great passer.
I think I finally found the perfect comparison. Slammin' Sam Lacey. I'm not old enough to have seen him play but the numbers are staggeringly similar. Any users on here that watched basketball in the 70's?

I couldn't care less about the record this year either. There's a lot of pressure for success by 2016 at the earliest (perhaps even next year). We just have to hope that the plan works accordingly and the next thing we know the Sixers are a big time competitor in a couple years. As far as Noel I like watching him play. Definitely skilled on both ends of the court, and of course it hurts his game to be surrounded with such a crappy team. I'm just worried he's going to land awkwardly soon and miss a bunch of time. I think that's just the nervous fan in me
