Anyone getting annoyed with all the And1's?

In theory, the And-1 counter is a great tool. It allows individuals to endorse a post without having to go through the seemingly barbaric way of quoting that post, and then adding a "+1" or "couldn't agree more," both of which unnecessarily add clutter to threads. However, there is an inherent issue with the And-1 that I've noticed has become exacerbated by many posters: it is discouraging thoughtful, analytical responses, and instead encouraging low-effort, witty, sarcastic posts that easily attract And-1's among the younger crowd on here. I think some reform to the And-1 system would be ideal, and hope that the administrators are considering such.

Although these And-1's are great, I would prefer a daily hand out limit. Perhaps 20 a day. This way, the spam would get reduced, and posters would be careful to spend their limited And1's only on deserving posts and not random ones on game threads.

It keeps the threads much cleaner while still allowing a board to show a consensus around a thought or opinion. I can't imagine what it would be like sorting through the "I agree with Johnny" posts to find new thoughts, ideas and opinions.

I understand that you think part of the problem is users posting jokes or puns in order to get And1, but I highly recommend disabling And1 in your preferences if you think it causes problems.

The problem a lot of times in the first or second pages of a thread people will try to post a joke/gif/picture/etc. in an attempt to collect a lot of And1s. Sometimes the real discussion won't start until you get to the third page. Also , many of the And1 bait posts are pretty much just a variation of each other that the attempted joke gets old real quick. The notification system is good for when people respond to your post but the And1 system prevents a good discussion from happening sometimes IMO.

Well, the only reason those posts would get AND 1's is because people like them. And I'm not so sure anyone is posting them just to get AND 1's (I never would have even thought of that). they likely truly think they are cute, funny or whatever.

If someone is abusing GIF's and junking up the thread, asking the mods to keep it in control (if they aren't already) would be appropriate. IDK, maybe I may be missing it because it just isn't happening in the forum I participate in.

While your input is definitely appreciated, I'm not sure if personally disabling And-1 is an effective solution. The recurring issue among most of the individuals who posted in this thread is that the unregulated And-1 feature is causing the quality of content to decrease on the boards. Now, individuals are more concerned with witty, tongue-in-cheek responses to often serious discussion questions, all for the sake of garnering their And-1 totals. I have noticed this is especially the case with the first few responses to a new thread, where And-1 phishing has the highest potential of being rewarded. I just hope the staff will consider some sort of regulation, where that be by virtue of increased moderation or by coding to the And-1 system itself. I think this thread in particular has some great suggestions that, I hope, administration is considering. It's highly disappointing when you read a serious OP, which has the potential to be a great topic, and then you scroll down to the replies and see derailing being rewarded.
