Re: Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year
While at the Phoenix game the other night, I was about 10 rows behind the Sixers bench and some fan in the section to the left of mine was screaming and throwing a fit like a child shouting at Noel "Hit the gym! Lift some weights". His girlfriend looked completely embarrassed and even I was having feeling some second-hand embarrassment for the dude yelling.
Noel looks pretty toned. Some guys are capable of adding/keeping on the mass like Dwight Howard. Others aren't. Obviously defensively people should be concerned about Noel's strength against opposing bigs, but his actual game is what we should be worried about most. He is only 20 years old and a rookie and I am sure his game will develop. KG didn't set the world on fire as a rookie either. It's going to take some time with Noel, but he feel like his ceiling will be a fringe all-star caliber player. No need to get worked up now.

His body is clearly not one that will ever be able to get to 260+, but I bet that he could get to 240.
If Davis could do it then I would imagine that Noel could.
Still, last night was the best performance of his career and I was really happy for him.
The right handed hook shot that he took over Amare(I think) was a thing of beauty. It was quick, and in rhythm and you figure that he could do that all day from that spot. The key of course is being able to get the ball in that spot.
His left handed floaters and hooks look a bit stiff and awkward, but I love that he has the guts to take them, and I think he will eventually get good enough at them that they are relatively routine for him.
He will probably never have a full post up game, but if he is able to shoot hooks and floaters with both hands then he will at least be able to contribute down there. His energy and athleticism are off the charts.
His life will get a lot easier when he is playing next to Embiid simply because the defenses will put their best post defenders on Joel, and there will be more room.
I just want to see incremental improvement each month of this year. I am very happy with him so far.

It shouldn't need to be said, but I'll say it anyway because of complaints about Noel's slight frame...
He's not going to get any bigger this year, if at all. We should notice a change in his physique from the end of this season and the beginning of next season. He's too busy playing 2-3 games a week to hit the gym and get jacked. Don't expect any improvement on his weight gain immediately happening.

Absolutely. Weight gain happens in the off season for players. He might not even put on weight next year. He is still only 20 years old. It may take him a few more years.
He was 10 pounds heavier than he is now last spring, but he wasn't able to keep the weight on when he got fully back into a regular basketball pattern. It is simply biology with him. Brett Brown said that he has done everything that hey have asked of him, but he isn't able to maintain weight right now.
I would guess that the same thing was true for Garnett early in his career as well, but he was eventually able to put on 20+ pounds. Noel's ceiling will be higher with 20 more pounds of muscle, but he can still be terrific without it.

Re: Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year
One thing that Noel really needs work on, and I'm not totally sure that it is his fault, is setting picks. Maybe the guards aren't always setting him up properly, but he doesn't set solid picks, and I'm surprised that he doesn't get called for moving screens more often as I see him do it pretty frequently.
This is an area where his skinniness doesn't help him. His picks are like standing a Popsicle stick up on a basketball court and hoping that the defender runs into it.

Seriously though, Noel is the least of our concerns. He's going to be a very good player. He strikes me as a rhythm player if that makes sense. Needs a few games to get into the flow, get the timing right. That's why he struggled so much to begin the season, the constant little injuries stopped him from the getting into a nice flow.

I agree. He isn't a player that is going to make his own offense very smoothly when there is chaos around him. He will really benefit by competent players around him so he can have the space to get into a flow instead of having to scratch and claw for everything.
He is a high energy player and when he gets a couple of those energy two handed dunks a game he can really lift the team.

If Noel can start cleanly catching 40% of interior passes thrown to him and make 60% of his FTs, he will waltz to ROY.

Noel has been on a hot streak lately, he's the only player who is keeping my interest in the team. It's good to see him have 30 productive minutes a night, even if his game still needs some seasoning.
I speak the truth.

I'm with you on that. When he's on the floor I'm that much more interested in the game.

Noel leads all rookies in field goal percentage (47.6), rebounding (6.5), blocks (1.3) and steals (1.6). He is sixth in scoring with 7.9 points per game.

Parker will win it (or KJ McDaniels
).
He's playing better every week AND his team wins bball games.

I like Mirotic's chances best if he keeps getting minutes. It would be nice to have Noel and McDaniels in the conversation too.

Jabari Parker seems to be the runaway favorite because he's officially "arrived." Usually the first rookie to "arrive" has a leg up on the rest of the class. MCW was that guy last year.

KJ McD would be in the conversation if we weren't in the running for the worst team ever.

I think if K.J. continues putting together scoring outbursts like he has been, he could horseshoe his way into the conversation. He needs to continue to stray away from single-digit scoring nights.

Is it that bad? When I hear that, I think of Sharone Wright from the mid-90s. Used to drive me crazy.

Re: Nerlens Noel will be 2014-2015 rookie of the year
I think Noel needs to play with a good rebounder/defensive frontcourt, just like in Kentucky. Right now, he's asked to do too much by being our defensive anchor in the interior and to be our best rebounder, playing alongside Davies and Sims. It's not like Noel can't carry the load. But I think right now, he doesn't have the physicality yet to get himself into good positioning to do these things.
I like the intensity he showed during the last three games, he was more physical that game. There were some instances where he pushed guys to get the rebounds (against Adams), made illegal screens or pushing Wiggins to not make the alley-oop LOL. I know these are illegal but he needs to do these kind of things due to his lack of physicality just like KG.

There’s never been a time in history when we look back and say that the people who were censoring free speech were the good guys.
