Quentin Dial is not a NT

Post#1 » by NinerSickness » Mon Nov 24, 2014 8:45 am

Dorsey, please come back soon.

Quentin Dial plays higher than any NT I've seen in a long time. And it's not just because he's tall; he simply plays really high. He lines up weird too.

Dial is a nice piece to have IMO, but I think he's a rich-man's TJE.

#49ers Injury Report: NT Glenn Dorsey is out but doesn't believe it'll keep him out too long. Quinton Dial to start
.

Thursday is coming pretty soon. Will Dorsey be ready?

Dial wasn't great, but it seemed like most of the damage rushing was to the outside. They were having success running over right tackle. The good news is that Unger is out for Seattle, so hopefully Dial can hold his own. If they get the running game going, there's just no way our offense can hang with them.

I'd be surprised if he went Thursday after he talked about it last Thursday and the way he talked about needing time to get it "worked out." I've been wrong before and maybe he goes for this one given the importance of it but if somebody forced me to say yes or no, I think it'll be a no go.

Jeff Deeney:

Alfred Morris had 7 carries for 73 yards (10.4 ypc) on runs outside of the RT yesterday, 14 carries for 52 yards (3.7 ypc) on all others.

It was a game where we really missed Bowman and Willis because they excel at attacking runs on the outside.

On topic though Dial is miscast as a NT and his true position is DE. And to be fair to Dial he's really our 3rd string emergency NT and was never really drafted to play NT in the first place.

Lynch wasn't setting the edge in the run game very well for parts. Brooks does a good job of this though.

Agreed on this. Dial is better as a 5-tech. He's playing NT just because we have to put him there right now, though. It'll be Dorsey/Williams probably moving forward until we grab someone in the draft.

Definitely love Dial as a DE, 6-5 318 he is just too tall for a NT...He could be the eventual replacement for Ray Mac and/or Cowboy, we'll see. We have Dorsey for 2 more seasons and Williams for 1 more, so plenty of time to groom a replacement from the draft.

That was my thought, but when the snap counts came out, Brooks actually played much more (37 to 21). I know Lynch was in for most of the passing downs, so I think it was Brooks who was struggling to set the edge. I distinctly recall one glaring missed tackle by Brooks. Otherwise, I can't recall specifically who was primarily to blame.

Speaking of injuries, what's the word on Brock? He supposed to be back sometime in the near future?

Last I heard was late last week that he hadn't even returned to practice yet and nothing came out today on him as far as I saw so far so I would have to believe that on a short week he'll be out at least this week yet, too.

Yea, hamstring injuries linger, dont want to come back too soon and risk being shut down for the season.
